How To Flood The Crater with Water in God of War: Ragnarok

Even if you play through the main narrative of God of War Ragnarok, players will find that they have several more stories and missions to go through. One notable mission is located in The Crater in Vanaheim.

Though players can explore the Crater when they first arrive, they’ll have to unlock the river to access further locations on the map, and doing so would also unlock some more rare treasures in the game.

This guide will teach you how to flood the Crater with water and unlock this incredible location!

The Story of the Crater

The Crater is a hidden location in Vanaheim that players can access about two-thirds through the main mission. It’s considered one of the biggest locations in the game. Besides the side quests, there is also a lot of loot to be discovered.

Players must complete the Scent of Survival favor to get to the Crater first. This sends them on a mission to look for Lunda’s pet hound, Helka. You can trigger the mission in the Vanaheim camp. If you complete it, the favor will have you end up in The Crater.

One of the most notable features of the Crater is that there is also a frozen thunderbolt in the middle of the location (just like the one in Midgard after Thor and Kratos’ fight). While playing the game, it’s revealed that this was caused by a fight between Thor and Kratos’ late wife Faye (or Laufey)—a fight that destroyed the town that would become The Crater.

Though there are missions that players can fulfill when they first get to The Crater, the area is generally recommended for high-level players based on what kind of enemies can be encountered. While players don’t have to finish everything in The Crater the moment they get there, finishing them before the final main story with Atreus is suggested.

Return of the River Quest

While you walk around The Crater, it’s hinted that the place used to be filled with water and life, and the Return of the River quest will have players restoring it to the location.

From The Plains, you have to get access to the Jungle, which is covered in fog, and you can get to it by trying to get to the south of the Plains, crossing through a cliff.

Following the cliff’s path, you will eventually get to a temple with its puzzles and enemies. This will eventually lead to a dam.

Once at the dam, players can unlock the floodgates. This will flood the rest of the Crater, unlocking all the locations.

The Crater’s Loot and Missions to Complete

While flooding the Crater doesn’t get the player anything directly, it does allow them access to several other treasures that are otherwise blocked when players first get to the location. For one, several of Odin’s Ravens can be accessed by completing the river quest. There are also several other chests in the game. These include artifacts and power-ups like the Apples of Idunn and the Horns of the Blood Mead.

Anyone looking to complete the Stags of the Four Seasons challenge should also finish this quest. This is because one is also located in the Jungle, the Sinkholes, and the Plains.

It’s said that The Crater is the key to unlocking one of the game’s best armor sets, the Dragon Scaled Armor. The Armor is acquired by defeating every dragon in the game. Three of five dragons can be found in The Crater (the rest are in Svartalfheim and Niflheim).

You can also expect to run into a centaur Huntress in each zone. Defeating these will grant you great items that can help craft some great armor.
