GTA 5: Fair Game Mission Guide (Gold Medal)

Cletus Ewing, Trevor’s Sandy Shores neighbor, loves to hunt and shoot random targets with his favorite sniper rifle. Cletus and Trevor first meet in Sandy Shores when Trevor spots Cletus hunting down some coyotes invading the neighborhood.

After an afternoon of hunting, Cletus will reach out to Trevor and invite him to go hunting for real.

Fair Game is a Strangers and Freaks Mission between Trevor and Cletus Ewing, where Cletus invites Trevor to go elk hunting in Paleto Forest.

We have outlined everything you need to know about Fair Game and how you can get a Gold Medal for completing the mission in GTA 5.

Fair Game Synopsis

Cletus texts Trevor, asking him to meet him at a lodge in Paleto Forest. Trevor heads to the area and finds Cletus outside the club holding a shotgun.

The pair greet each other, and then Cletus immediately hands Trevor a sniper rifle and asks him if he is ready to hunt some elks. Trevor agrees and asks Cletus to lead the way.

Before the pair leave the lodge, Cletus hands Trevor an object and asks him to put it in his mouth.

As the pair walked toward the woods area, Trevor asked Cletus what the thing he had given him was. Cletus changes the topic, saying he will explain later as he must first fill Trevor in on the basics of elk hunting.

Cletus explains to Trevor that elks are hyper-sensitive animals with a powerful sense of smell, meaning they must stand against the wind’s direction to mask their scent while hunting.

Cletus leads the way and maintains a downwind position so the pair doesn’t scare away the elk in the area.

A few moments later, Trevor and Cletus spot their first elk. Cletus tells Trevor to take his time and shoot when he’s ready.

Trevor takes his shot and downs the elk with a well-aimed heart shot. Afterward, the pair move towards the next location, and Cletus asks Trevor to stay close to him.

Cletus tells Trevor about the elk whistle he gave him earlier and explains it’s used to spot other elks and potentially other elk-hunting animals in the area.

Soon after using the elk whistle, Trevor and Cletus spot a second elk, which, like the first elk, Trevor easily downed with a precise heart shot.

The pair move further into the woods to find a mating elk pair. Cletus tells Trevor he must leave female elks alone as they only hunt male elks.

Trevor blows his whistle again to find the elks. Trevor and Cletus spot their next target soon after, which Trevor easily puts down.

After downing the third elk, Cletus tells Trevor he has to go, but Trevor can send him a picture of his solo kill.

As Cletus instructed, Trevor took a photo of the kill and sent it to Cletus. Like the three previous elks, Trevor easily spots and kills the fourth elk.

A few moments later, Cletus gives Trevor a call to discuss business. Cletus says wild meat, such as elk meat, is in high demand.

So if Trevor can hunt down some elks, Cletus can sell the meat for some money. Trevor tells Cletus he will consider it as he has other business.

Fair Game Mission GTA 5 Guide

Follow Cletus to the woods.

image 202

A Wind Direction indicator will appear on your screen’s lower right corner. Keep an eye on this indicator and keep the arrow facing down the entire mission.

1 8

Follow Cletus’ lead. Watch out for a red blotch on the map. This indicates the elk’s general location. Remember to keep a downwind position so the elk do not detect you.

2 9

Use Stealth mode to make as little noise as possible.

image 203

When you finally spot the elk, take your time and wait for the elk to raise its head and expose its chest.

image 204

Aim for the middle chest area and take your shot.

image 205

After taking down the first elk, wait for Cletus and follow his lead again. Cletus will lead you to the optimal downwind position so the other elks do not spot you.

image 206

As soon as Cletus stops walking, take out the whistle he gave you earlier to call out the next elk.

image 207

Seconds after you use the elk whistle, a red blotch will appear on the map. Take note of the wind direction as you approach the area.

Like the first elk, wait until the animal raises its head and shows its chest. Take your time and shoot when you are ready.

Follow Cletus one last time as he leads you to the next target.

image 210

Use your whistle as soon as Cletus stops walking. Wait for the red blotch on the map like the previous targets.

image 211

On the third time, two elks will show up instead of one. Cletus says not to kill the female elk (no antlers), so look for the male elk instead.

Like the previous targets, wait until the perfect moment to land that clean chest shot. After landing all three heart shots, you will get the Heart Hunter Gold Medal Objective.

After successfully killing the third target, Cletus leaves the area and asks Trevor to send him a photo of his first solo elk kill. This is the best time to take everything you learned in the previous targets and apply them.

After successfully downing the last elk, approach it and take a photo using Trevor’s phone.

Send the photo to Cletus. Walk away from the wood and back to the cabin, waiting for Cletus’ call.

Shot Through The Heart

Trevor’s strong killer instincts make him a very skilled hunter. His ability to land precise shots with a sniper rifle helped him complete Cletus’ challenges and tasks easily.

The Gold Medal Objectives for Fair Game are simple and easy to complete. The first Gold Medal Objective, Downwind, is almost a given, as Cletus will show you the ideal position to avoid being detected by elk. Heart Hunter, however, requires a bit more patience, as you’ll need to wait for the elk to raise its head and expose its chest area to get a clear shot.

Follow the tips we have shared above to complete Fair Game with a Gold Medal on your first run.
