Learn how to find the grub in the Fog Canyon in Hollow Knight!
Team Cherry’s Metroidvania action-adventure game, Hollow Knight, follows the journey of a nameless warrior called the Knight as he travels through Hallownest, now a kingdom ruined by a supernatural disease. As the Knight journeys through Hallownest, he encounters various characters that will help fully unravel the story in the game. Some of these characters are cute little creatures called Grubs.
Grubs are small green creatures trapped inside glass jars that the Knight will find throughout Hallownest. These Grubs were trapped by a Void creature named The Collector, who loves to collect dead and alive bugs all around Hallownest and preserve them in glass jars.
The Knight will know if there is a Grub nearby as its high-pitched crying can be heard in its general direction. Then, once the Knight finds one, the Knight can free them by striking the glass jar with the Nail to break it. After the Knight frees a Grub, it will do a little high-pitched shout of joy and burrow into the ground to return to its colony with the Grubfather.
There are a total of 46 Grubs all over Hallownest, and there are a few rewards for freeing a specific number of Grubs:
- For the first four Grubs found, the Grubfather, found in the northwesternmost part of the Forgotten Crossroads, will reward the Knight with Geo (10 Geo for the first Grub, 20 Geo for the second, 30 Geo for the third, and 40 Geo for the fourth Grub found).

This guide will teach you how to find all the Grubs in the Fog Canyon!
Fog Canyon Grub
There is only one Grub in the Fog Canyon area, and it can be found in a hidden pathway behind a wall in the middle of the left wall in the room with the entrance to the Teacher’s Archives in the Fog Canyon.
The Knight will encounter various enemies in Fog Canyon. Still, the Knight will specifically encounter the following enemies on the way to the Grub in the Fog Canyon: Uomas, Oomas, and Charged Lumaflies.
Before the Knight can find the Grub that was mentioned, the Knight must obtain the Shade Cloak ability, which is the upgrade to the Mothwing Cloak ability that allows the Knight to dash through enemies and their attacks as well as Shade Gates, and the Crystal Heart ability, which allows the Knight to fly and dash continuously and horizontally until the Knight hits a wall, hits an enemy that was not killed by the hit, or if the player intentionally stops the dash.
Additionally, so the Knight will be able to traverse Fog Canyon more easily, it is recommended that the Knight should have the Monarch Wings ability, which allows the Knight to perform a double jump in mid-air, the Mantis Claw ability, which allows the Knight to cling to walls and jump off of them, and the Isma’s Tear ability, which allows the Knight to swim in pools of acid without taking any damage. Finding the Grub in the Fog Canyon will be no challenge with these abilities.
To find the Grub in Fog Canyon, this is what the Knight must do:
- Starting from the Queen’s Station Stagway Bench, take the exit on the right, jump up the platforms, head to the top, and take the exit on the left.
- The Knight has now arrived in Fog Canyon. In this room, the Knight will encounter a lot of Uomas and Oomas. Be careful when attacking Oomas, as it will result in its shell popping, and its orange core will home in on the Knight and explode. Head to the very top of the room and take the exit on the left.
- The Knight will encounter many more of Uomas and Oomas in this next room. Head to the very top of the shaft and take the exit on the right.
- Next, head to the right, where five Oomas, two Uomas, and a pool of acid are below. Eventually, the Knight will find a Shade Gate, which is a gate made from the void, in the middle of the room. If the Knight tries to pass through, the Knight will bounce back but will not deal damage. To continue, the Knight must use the Shade Cloak ability to pass through the Shade Gate. Press the assigned dash button to use the Shade Cloak ability and pass through the Shade Gate; continue to the right, where the Knight will encounter five more Oomas and four Uomas, then take the exit on the right. It is worth noting that Cornifer can be found at the top part of the room after the Shade Gate, and the Knight can purchase the map of the area from him for 150 Geo.
- Next, continue to the right, where the Knight will encounter 11 more Oomas. Be watchful of the explosive bubbles on the floor. Then, the Knight will encounter three more Uomas and a pool of acid below. Go through them and take the exit on the right.
- The Knight will encounter more Uomas, Oomas, and Charged Lumaflies in this next part of the room. Head to the bottom of the room and take the exit on the left.
- Next, head to the left, where the Knight will encounter two Oomas and one Uoma, then, after that, eight more Oomas, and then, after that, two more Uomas. Go through enemies and take the exit on the left.
- After that, the Knight will find the entrance to the Teacher’s Archives! Head to the left, then from the path’s edge, use the Crystal Heart ability to dash and fly towards the left.
- Finally, at the end of the dash and fly of the Crystal Heart ability, the Knight will pass through a hidden path on the wall and enter a hidden part of the room with a Grub inside a glass jar! The Knight can now strike the glass jar and free the Grub!
After finding the Grub in the Fog Canyon, the Knight is one step closer to finding them all, receiving the Grubberfly’s Elegy Charm and unlocking the Metamorphosis Achievement!
