Team Cherry’s Metroidvania action-adventure game, Hollow Knight, follows the journey of a nameless warrior called the Knight as he travels through Hallownest, a kingdom now ruined by a supernatural disease. As the Knight journeys through Hallownest, he encounters various characters that will help fully unravel the story in the game. Some of these characters are cute little creatures called Grubs.

Grubs are small green creatures trapped inside glass jars that the Knight will find throughout Hallownest. These Grubs were trapped by a Void creature named The Collector, who loves to collect dead and alive bugs all around Hallownest and preserve them in glass jars.

The Knight will know if a Grub is nearby as its high-pitched crying can be heard in its general direction. Then, once the Knight finds one, the Knight can free them by striking the glass jar with the Nail to break it. After the Knight frees a Grub, it will do a little high-pitched shout of joy and burrow into the ground to return to its colony with the Grubfather.

There are a total of 46 Grubs all over Hallownest, and there are a few rewards for freeing a specific number of Grubs:

For the first four Grubs found, the Grubfather, found in the northwesternmost part of the Forgotten Crossroads, will reward the Knight with Geo (10 Geo for the first Grub, 20 Geo for the second, 30 Geo for the third, and 40 Geo for the fourth Grub found).
After freeing the fifth Grub, the Grubfather will reward the Knight with a Mask Shard.
After freeing the sixth to ninth Grubs, the Grubfather will reward the Knight with Geo (50 Geo for the sixth, 60 Geo for the seventh, 70 Geo for the eighth, and 80 Geo for the ninth Grub found).
After freeing the tenth Grub, the Grubfather will reward the Knight the Grubsong Charm, which allows the Knight to gain Soul when taking damage.
After freeing the 11th to 15th Grub, the Grubfather will reward the Knight with Geo (90 Geo for the 11th, 100 Geo for the 12th, 110 Geo for the 13th, 120 Geo for the 14th, and 130 Geo for the 15th Grub found).
After freeing the 16th Grub, the Grubfather will reward the Knight with a Rancid Egg.
After freeing the 17th to 22nd Grub, the Grubfather will reward the Knight with Geo (140 Geo for the 17th, 150 Geo for the 18th, 160 Geo for the 19th, 165 Geo for the 20th, 170 Geo for the 21st, and 180 Geo for the 22nd Grub found).
After freeing half (23) of the total Grubs, the Grubfather will reward the Knight with a Hallownest Seal, and the Grubfriend Achievement will be unlocked.
After freeing the 24th to 30th Grub, the Grubfather will reward the Knight with Geo (200 Geo for the 24th, 200 Geo for the 25th, 205 Geo for the 26th, 210 Geo for the 27th, 215 Geo for the 28th, 220 Geo for the 29th, and 220 Geo for the 30th Grub found).
After freeing the 31st Grub, the Grubfather will reward the Knight with a Pale Ore.
After freeing the 32nd to 37th Grub, the Grubfather will reward the Knight with Geo (230 Geo for the 32nd, 235 Geo for the 33rd, 240 Geo for the 34th, 245 Geo for the 35th, 250 Geo for the 36th, and 255 Geo for the 37th Grub found).
After freeing the 38th Grub, the Grubfather will reward the Knight with a King’s Idol.
After freeing the 39th to 45th Grub, the Grubfather will reward the Knight with Geo (260 Geo for the 39th, 265 Geo for the 40th, 270 Geo for the 41st, 280 Geo for the 42nd, 290 Geo for the 43rd, 295 Geo for the 44th, and 300 Geo for the 45th Grub found).
After freeing all of the Grubs around Hallownest, the Grubfather will reward the Knight the Grubberfly’s Elegy Charm, which allows the Knight to fire projectiles when attacking using the Nail and when at full health, and the Metamorphosis Achievement is unlocked.

Forgotten Crossroads Grub 1

There are five Grubs in the Forgotten Crossroads area. One can be found up a high ledge above the room of Ancestral Mound on the left side of the upper middle part of the Forgotten Crossroads.

The Knight will encounter various enemies in the Forgotten Crossroads, but the Knight will specifically encounter the following enemies on the way to the first Grub: Tiktiks, Crawlids, and Gruzzers.

Before the Knight can find the Grub mentioned, it is required that the Knight obtain the Monarch Wings ability, which allows the Knight to perform a double jump in mid-air, or the Mothwing Cloak ability, which allows the Knight to perform a horizontal dash forward. Finding the Grub in the Forgotten Crossroads will be no challenge with these abilities.

To find the first Grub in the Forgotten Crossroads, this is what the Knight must do:

Starting from the Bench up in Dirtmouth, head to the right past the Stagway Station entrance and Iselda’s Shop, then drop down the entrance of the Forgotten Crossroads.
Next, head to the left upon landing, jump across the gap, continue heading to the left, drop down the platforms where the Knight will encounter a Tiktik and a Crawlid, and then take the exit on the left.
After that, the Knight will be in a large room filled with Gruzzers and more Tiktiks. Head down using the small platforms while sticking on the shaft’s right side, defeat the Gruzzers and Tiktiks if you want, and take the next exit on the right.
Then, head to the right where the Knight will encounter a Crawlid, jump up the slightly elevated platform on the right, drop down the platform on the right where the Knight will encounter another Crawlid, jump up the small platform above on the right where the Knight will encounter a Tiktik on the platform above on the left and another Tiktik on the platform above on the right, then jump up the platform above on the right.
Next, jump and dash or perform a secondary jump up the ledge above on the right with the help of the Mothwing Cloak or the Monarch Wings ability, and there, the Knight will find a Grub trapped inside a glass jar! The Knight can now strike the glass jar to break it and free the Grub!

Forgotten Crossroads Grub 2

Another Grub can be found at the end of the room on the northeasternmost part of the Forgotten Crossroads.

The Knight will encounter lots of various enemies in the Forgotten Crossroads. Still, the Knight will specifically encounter the following enemies on the way to the second Grub: Tiktiks, Husk Bullies, a Husk Hornhead, and a Husk Guard.

Fortunately, the Knight must have no required abilities or spells to find this Grub.

To find the second Grub in the Forgotten Crossroads, this is what the Knight must do:

Starting from the Bench up in Dirtmouth, head to the right past the Stagway Station entrance and Iselda’s Shop, then drop down the entrance of the Forgotten Crossroads.
Next, upon landing, head to the right, jump towards the small platform on the right, jump towards another small platform on the right where the Knight will encounter a Tiktik and a Husk Bully below, jump towards the small platform on the right, jump towards the platform on the right, and take the exit on the right.
Then, head to the right, where the Knight will pass through the Temple of the Black Egg entrance and take the exit at the end of the path.
Afterward, head to the right, where the Knight will encounter two separate Husk Bullies and a Husk Hornhead, and take the exit at the end of the path.
Next, drop down the gap on the right, head to the right, jump up the small platform above, jump towards the ledge above the right, then take the exit on the right.
Then, Head to the right, where the Knight will encounter a Husk Guard.
Finally, after defeating the Husk Guard, continue heading to the right, and the Knight will find a Grub trapped inside a glass jar at the end of the path! The Knight can now strike the glass jar to break it and free the Grub!

Forgotten Crossroads Grub 3

Another Grub can be found inside a hidden part of a room on the right side near the middle of the Forgotten Crossroads.

The Knight will encounter various enemies in the Forgotten Crossroads, but the Knight will specifically encounter the following enemies on the way to the third Grub: Tiktiks and Aspid Hunters.

Fortunately, the Knight must have no required abilities or spells to find this Grub.

To find the third Grub in the Forgotten Crossroads, this is what the Knight must do this:

Starting from the Bench in the Forgotten Crossroads Stagway Station, head to the right to exit the room.
Next, jump towards the platform above on the right, where the Knight will encounter a Tiktik and a Vengefly; jump up the small platform above, jump towards the ledge on the right, jump towards the elevated ledge above on the right, and jump towards the platform above on the left where the Knight will encounter another Tiktik.
Then, jump up the platform above on the right and jump up the ledge above on the left.
After that, you will see that the wall on the left is breakable. Strike the wall on the left several times to break it and reveal a hidden part of the room.
Next, head to the left to enter the hidden path where the Knight will encounter two Aspid Hunters.
Finally, jump up the platform on the left, and the Knight will find a Grub trapped inside a glass jar! The Knight can now strike the glass jar to break it and free the Grub!

Forgotten Crossroads Grub 4

Another Grub can be found at the top of a high platform in a room in the southeastern part of the Forgotten Crossroads.

The Knight will encounter various enemies in the Forgotten Crossroads. Still, the Knight will specifically encounter the following enemies on the way to the fourth Grub: an Aspid Hunter, a Leaping Husk, and Aspid Mothers.

Fortunately, the Knight must have no required abilities or spells to find this Grub. However, the player must be proficient at nail-bouncing to reach the Grub. If the player is not, it would greatly help if the player has the Mantis Claw ability, which allows the Knight to cling to walls and jump off them.

To find the fourth Grub in the Forgotten Crossroads, this is what the Knight must do this:

Starting from the Bench in the Forgotten Crossroads Stagway Station, head to the right to exit the room, drop down the platforms on the right, then take the exit in the middle that leads downwards.
Next, upon landing, drop down the small platform below on the left, the small platform below on the right, and the bottom of the room where the Knight will encounter an Aspid Hunter.
Then, head to the right through a narrow path where the Knight will encounter a Leaping Husk, then take the exit on the right.
After that, head to the right, jump up a small platform above, jump on the small platform above on the right, then take the exit above.
Next, head to the left, jump up the platform above on the right, jump up the small platform above on the left, jump up the small platform above on the right where the Knight will encounter an Aspid Mother, jump up the platform above on the left, jump up the small platform above on the right, and jump up the platform above on the left where the Knight will encounter another Aspid Mother.
Then, jump up the small platform slightly above on the right, jump towards the small platform above, jump up the smaller platform above, jump towards the small platform above on the left, jump towards the platform on the left, drop down the gap, then take the exit on the left.
After that, head to the left, jump up the small platform, jump towards the platform on the left with the spikes on top, nail-bounce on top of the spikes to jump on top of it, land on the small platform on the left, jump towards the platform on the left with spikes surrounding the platform, nail-bounce on top of the spikes to jump off it, head towards the next platform on the left that also has spikes, nail-bounce on top of the spikes of this platform to jump off of it, head towards the next platform on the left that also has spikes, nail-bounce on top of the spikes of this platform to jump off of it, and head towards the large platform on the left. If the player has the Mantis Claw ability, the Knight can just head towards the room’s wall on the left, climb up the wall with the help of the Mantis Claw ability, and then jump towards the big platform on the right.
Finally, the Knight will find a Grub trapped inside a glass jar! The Knight can now strike the glass jar to break it and free the Grub!

Forgotten Crossroads Grub 5

Another Grub can be found above a platform on the leftmost part of a room in the southwesternmost part of Forgotten Crossroads.

The Knight will encounter various enemies in the Forgotten Crossroads. Still, the Knight will specifically encounter the following enemies on the way to the fifth Grub: Tiktiks, Crawlids, Gruzzers, and Goams.

Fortunately, the Knight must have no required abilities or spells to find this Grub.

To find the fifth Grub in the Forgotten Crossroads, this is what the Knight must do this:

Starting from the Bench up in Dirtmouth, head to the right past the Stagway Station entrance and Iselda’s Shop, then drop down the entrance of the Forgotten Crossroads.
Next, upon landing, head to the left, jump across the gap, continue heading to the left, drop down the platforms where the Knight will encounter a Tiktik and a Crawlid, then take the exit on the left.
After that, the Knight will be in a large room filled with Gruzzers and more Tiktiks. Head to the bottom of the room using the small platforms in the middle, defeat the Gruzzers and Tiktiks if you want, and take the exit that leads downwards in the middle.
Then, upon entering the room, drop down the small platform on the left, drop down the gap on the right, drop through the narrow path, head to the left, drop down the shaft, and take the exit on the left.
Next, head to the left where the Knight will encounter a Goam; wait for the Goam to be underground, jump across towards the small platform above on the left where there will be spikes below, jump across the spikes towards the small platform below on the left where the Knight will encounter another Goam, wait for the Goam to head back up, jump across the spikes towards the platform on the left, jump up the ledge above on the left, and take the exit.
After that, head to the left, drop down the platforms on the left, drop towards the small platform below on the left above a pool of acid, jump towards the platform on the left where the Knight will encounter an Aspid Mother, head to the left, jump across the pool of acid towards a tall, thin platform on the left, and jump across the pool of acid towards another platform on the left where a spike will fall from the ceiling.
Finally, jump up the ledge above on the left, and the Knight will find a Grub trapped inside a glass jar! The Knight can now strike the glass jar to break it and free the Grub!

After finding all of the Grubs in the Forgotten Crossroads, the Knight is one step closer to finding them all, receiving the Grubberfly’s Elegy Charm and unlocking the Metamorphosis Achievement!
