Learn how to find the Grubs in Kingdom’s Edge in Hollow Knight!
Team Cherry’s Metroidvania action-adventure game, Hollow Knight, follows the journey of a nameless warrior called the Knight as he travels through Hallownest, now a kingdom in ruins because of a supernatural disease. As the Knight journeys through Hallownest, he will encounter various characters that will help fully unravel the story in the game. Some of these characters are cute little creatures called Grubs.
Grubs are small green creatures trapped inside glass jars that the Knight will find throughout Hallownest. These Grubs were trapped by a Void creature named The Collector, who loves to collect dead and alive bugs all around Hallownest and preserve them in glass jars.
The Knight will know if there is a Grub nearby as its high-pitched crying can be heard in its general direction. Then, once the Knight finds one, the Knight can free them by striking the glass jar with the Nail to break it. After the Knight frees a Grub, it will do a little high-pitched shout of joy and burrow into the ground to return to its colony with the Grubfather.
There are a total of 46 Grubs all over Hallownest, and there are a few rewards for freeing a specific number of Grubs:
- For the first four Grubs found, the Grubfather, found in the northwesternmost part of the Forgotten Crossroads, will reward the Knight with Geo (10 Geo for the first Grub, 20 Geo for the second, 30 Geo for the third, and 40 Geo for the fourth Grub found).
- After freeing the fifth Grub, the Grubfather will reward the Knight with a Mask Shard.
- After freeing the sixth to ninth Grubs, the Grubfather will reward the Knight with Geo (50 Geo for the sixth, 60 Geo for the seventh, 70 Geo for the eighth, and 80 Geo for the ninth Grub found).

This guide will teach you to find all the Grubs in Kingdom’s Edge!
Kingdom’s Edge Grub 1
There are two Grubs in the Kingdom’s Edge area. One can be found at the end of a narrow path on the southeasternmost part of Kingdom’s Edge.
The Knight will encounter various enemies in Kingdom’s Edge. Still, the Knight will specifically meet the following enemies on the way to the first Grub: a Husk Hornhead, a Husk Dandy, a Gluttonous Husk, Vengeflies, Belflies, Booflies, Hoppers, Primal Aspids, and Great Hoppers.
Before the Knight can find the Grub that was mentioned, it is required that the Knight has the Monarch Wings ability, which allows the Knight to perform secondary jump mid-air, the Mothwing Cloak ability, which allows the Knight to dash forwards, the Mantis Claw ability, which allows the Knight to cling to walls and jump off of them, and the Desolate Dive spell or the Descending Dark spell (which is the upgrade to the Desolate Dive spell), which allows the Knight to strike the ground with concentrated Soul. The Knight must also purchase the Lumafly Lantern, which helps the player see in the dark, from Sly in Dirtmouth. With this item, spell, and abilities, finding the first Grub in Kingdom’s Edge will be no challenge.
To find the first Grub in Kingdom’s Edge, this is what the Knight must do (this is assuming that this is the player’s first time entering Kingdom’s Edge):
- First, ride the Stagway to King’s Station and take the exit on the left just after the Bench (use the Bench if you want to heal and save your game).
- Then, drop to the bottom (kill the Husk Hornhead, Husk Dandy, and the Gluttonous Husk in the area if you want some Soul and Geo) and take the exit on the right, which will have another Stagway sign.
- Upon entering, the Knight will see a broken Bench in half, a flooded Stagway Station, and two Vengeflies. Kill both Vengeflies and drop down on the water. Swim to the right, where the Knight will go through a hidden passageway.
- The next room will be dark, so the Knight will use the Lumafly Lantern to light the room. Upon entering, you will immediately encounter a dive-bombing Belfly, so dodge or hide below an elevated platform to avoid being damaged. Jump up the platforms, continue to the right, where the Knight will encounter two more Belflies, then take the exit on the right.
- Upon entering, the Knight is now on the central cliff of Kingdom’s Edge! Head down the central cliff’s small platforms (where the Knight will encounter a bunch of Booflies) until you reach the bottom of the giant chasm (just be careful not to fall on the pool of acid at the bottom), then head to the right and take the exit.
- Afterward, head to the right, where the Knight will encounter three Hoppers, a Primal Aspid, three more Hoppers, another Primal Aspid, and another Hopper. At the end of the path, you will see a tall wall. Get to the top of the wall by jumping and using the Mantis Claw ability to continue heading up the wall.
- Next, head to the right, drop down on the gap, continue heading right where the Knight will encounter a Great Hopper, head up the platform after the Great Hopper using the Mantis Claw ability where the Knight will encounter another Primal Aspid, drop down the gap on the right, then continue heading to the right where the Knight will encounter two more Great Hoppers.
- Then, at the end of the path is another tall wall. Head to the top of the wall using the Mantis Claw ability, then continue to the right, where the Knight will find a large house and a Bench (use the Bench if you want to heal and save your progress). The Knight will find Nailmaster Oro inside the house, who can teach the Knight the Dash Slash Nail Art for 800 Geo.
- From the Bench, continue to the right and take the exit. Then, in the next room, continue heading to the right and near the end of the wall (it is worth noting that the Knight can still head to the right in this room and find a Soul Totem), part of the floor will start rumbling which implies that it is breakable. Let the Knight cast the Desolate Dive or the Descending Dark spell to strike, break the ground, and continue to the next hidden part of the area.
- Next, upon landing in the next area, head to the left, where part of the ground will start rumbling again (there is also another Soul Totem ahead). Let the Knight cast the Desolate Dive or the Descending Dark spell to strike, break the ground, and continue. Then, upon landing, the Knight will encounter two Hoppers.
- Then, head to the left, where the Knight will encounter two more Hoppers and a Primal Aspid; at the end of the path, head up the platforms using the Mantis Claw ability; at the top, head to the left (the Knight will also find another Soul Totem on the right) where the Knight will encounter another Primal Aspid.
- After that, let the Knight stand below where you saw the Primal Aspid, and you will see that the floor will also start to rumble. Let the Knight cast the Desolate Dive or the Descending Dark spell to strike, break the ground, and continue. Then, upon landing, the Knight will be in a room with parts of the floor filled with spikes and encounter a Great Hopper. Head to the right, jump across the spikes on the floor, and use the Mothwing Cloak ability to dash through the narrow opening with the spikes on the bottom.
- Next, head to the right, where the Knight will encounter another Hopper; at the end of the path, climb up the narrow shaft with the help of the Mantis Claw ability, where a rock spike will fall; at the top, head to the right where the Knight will encounter another Hopper, and at the end of the path climb up another narrow shaft with the help of the Mantis Claw ability where a rock spike will fall.
- Finally, at the top, quickly head to the right, where four rock spikes will fall, and the Knight will find a Grub inside a glass jar! The Knight can now strike the glass jar and free the Grub!
Kingdom’s Edge Grub 2
The second Grub in Kingdom’s Edge can be found at the end of the room inside a hidden breakable wall on the right side near the middle of Kingdom’s Edge.
The Knight will encounter many enemies in Kingdom’s Edge. Still, the Knight will specifically encounter the following enemies on the way to the second Grub: Primal Aspids and Hoppers.
Before the Knight can find the Grub that was mentioned, it is required that the Knight has the Mantis Claw ability, which allows the Knight to cling to walls and jump off of them, and the Monarch Wings ability, which allows the Knight to perform a double jump in mid-air, or the Mothwing Cloak ability, which allows the Knight to perform a horizontal dash forward. Finding the second Grub in Kingdom’s Edge will be no challenge with these abilities.

To find the second Grub in Kingdom’s Edge, this is what the Knight must do:
- Starting from the Bench in the northeast of Kingdom’s Edge, head to the left, take the exit that leads downwards, head to the right, drop down the gap, drop down the next gap on the right, drop down the next gap on the right again, drop down another gap on the right again, head to the left, drop down the gap, jump over the spikes on the floor where the Knight will encounter a Primal Aspid, head to the left, and jump over the next spikes on the floor.
- Next, drop down the gap on the left, continue heading to the left, drop down the next gap on the left where the Knight will encounter a Hopper, jump towards the small platform below on the right where a rock spike will fall on, drop down the platform below where the Knight will encounter another Primal Aspid, and drop down the gap on the left where the Knight will encounter another Hopper.
- Then, head to the right where another rock spike will fall, jump across the spikes on the floor where another rock spike will fall, and the Knight will encounter two Primal Aspids who will appear out of thin air. Here, the high-pitched babble of the Grub can be heard, which means that it is nearby.
- After defeating the two Primal Aspids, go towards the wall on the right and repeatedly strike it to break it and reveal a hidden path.
- Next, head to the right, climb up the wall on the right with the help of the Mantis Claw ability, jump towards the wall on the left above the spikes, and climb up as there are also spikes above on the wall on the right, and at the top jump towards the platform on the left above the spikes with the help of the Mothwing Cloak ability or the Monarch Wings ability where another rock spike will fall. The Knight will encounter another Primal Aspid.
- Finally, jump towards the platform on the left after the spikes with the help of the Mothwing Cloak or Monarch Wings ability, where another rock spike will fall, and the Knight will find a Grub inside a glass jar! The Knight can now strike the glass jar and free the Grub!
After finding both Grubs in Kingdom’s Edge, the Knight is one step closer to finding them all, receiving the Grubberfly’s Elegy Charm, and unlocking the Metamorphosis Achievement!
