Learn how to obtain the Deep Focus Charm in Hollow Knight!
Team Cherry’s Metroidvania action-adventure game, Hollow Knight, follows the journey of a nameless warrior called the Knight as he travels through Hallownest, now a kingdom ruined by a supernatural disease. As the Knight journeys through Hallownest, he can unlock new abilities, spells, and charms that will help him traverse through different areas of Hallownest and defeat enemies.
In the game, special items give the Knight different abilities and bonuses called Charms. To equip or unequip these Charms, the Knight must sit on a Bench, and the Knight must have enough unused Notches to equip them. In this guide, we’ll learn about the Deep Focus charm.
One of the 45 Charms in the game is the Deep Focus Charm, which requires and takes up a whopping four Charm Notches. When equipped, the Deep Focus charm increases the time for when the Knight uses Focus but will heal two Masks instead of just one. The Deep Focus charm will increase the time when the Knight uses Focus by 65% but will make up for it in the number of Masks healed.
Because of the charm’s effect of taking longer to use Focus, the Deep Focus charm should not be used on boss battles but instead in situations where the Knight has a lot of time to rest, like in platforming challenges. With the Deep Focus charm, the Knight will take longer when healing and using Focus, but the Masks healed will be doubled!
Location
The Deep Focus charm can be found at the end of a platforming segment inside a hidden room filled with crystals in the western part of Crystal Peak, northeast of Hallownest.
On the way to acquiring the Deep Focus charm in the Crystal Peak area, the Knight will encounter a few enemies, specifically Husk Miners, Glimbacks, and Crystal Crawlers.
Before the Knight can find the Deep Focus charm, it is required that the Knight has the Crystal Heart ability, which allows the Knight to continuously dash and fly forwards until the Knight hits a wall, hits an enemy that was not killed by the dash, or if the player stops the dash, and the Mantis Claw ability, which allows the Knight to cling to walls and jump off of them.
To make the journey to the Deep Focus charm easier, it is recommended that the Knight has the Monarch Wings ability, which allows the Knight to perform a secondary jump in mid-air, and the Mothwing Cloak ability, which allows the Knight to dash forward horizontally. The Knight must also purchase the Lumafly Lantern from Sly in Dirtmouth to light up dark rooms. Acquiring the Deep Focus charm will be no challenge with this item and these abilities.
To find the Deep Focus charm, this is what the Knight must do:
- From the bench at the bottom of Crystal Peak, head to the left and take the exit on the left.
- In the next room, the Knight will encounter a Husk Miner. Head slightly to the left, head up the shaft using the Mantis Claw ability before the gap with the conveyor belts, head to the left again, and take the exit above.
- Next, take the path on either the left, where the Knight will go up a level and encounter a Glimback, then head up the path above in the middle, where the Knight will encounter two Husk Miners and another Glimback that can be reached by using the Mantis Claw ability to cling to the wall on the left to ride the conveyor belt upwards then jump towards the next level, or take the path on the right where the Knight can use the Mantis Claw ability to cling to the wall on the right then jump towards the next level where the Knight will encounter a Husk Miner. Either way, take the path above on the right that leads upwards. It is worth noting that the path on the right requires the Knight to have the Monarch Wings ability or the double jump ability to reach and continue on the path.
- After that, head to the left and, using the Mantis Claw ability, cling to the conveyor belt on the wall on the left to ride up, then jump towards the next platform and take the exit above.
- The Knight will encounter a bunch of Crystal Crawlers in this next room. Head to the right, head up by jumping up the platforms, all while evading the lasers or defeating the Crystal Crawlers, then head to the left, where the Knight will encounter a Husk Miner.
- Next, head to the wall on the left; you will see that part of the wall is breakable. Strike the wall several times to break it and reveal an exit, then take the exit.
- Then, head to the left using the Crystal Heart ability to fly across the gap. The Knight will hit a tall platform and quickly jump to the top of the platform using the Mantis Claw ability.
- After that, drop down to the lower platform, and you will see three Crystal Crawlers just ahead emitting lasers that may halt the Knight’s Crystal Heart ability. Hold down the assigned SUPER DASH button to charge the Knight’s Crystal Heart ability, wait for the right timing to cross the Crystal Crawlers (wait for the Crystal Crawler on the left on the bottom to end emitting its laser the second time), then let go of the assigned SUPER DASH button to use the Crystal Heart ability to fly across the gap and the Crystal Crawlers. The Knight will then hit a wall with a platform below, so there is no need to act quickly.
- Next, jump over the platform on the left with the crystals on top with the help of the Monarch Wings ability to perform a secondary jump in mid-air or the Mantis Claw ability to cling to the top part of the side of the platform, then jump off of it then land on the next platform.
- Then, you will see three more Crystal Crawlers just ahead emitting lasers that may halt the Knight’s Crystal Heart ability. Hold down the assigned SUPER DASH button to charge the Knight’s Crystal Heart ability, wait for the right timing to cross the Crystal Crawlers (wait for the Crystal Crawler on the bottom to end emitting its laser), then let go of the assigned SUPER DASH button to use the Crystal Heart ability to fly across the gap and the Crystal Crawlers. The Knight will then hit a wall with a platform below.
- After that, jump to the left side of the platform and see five more Crystal Crawlers emitting lasers that may halt the Knight’s Crystal Heart ability. Hold down the assigned SUPER DASH button to charge the Knight’s Crystal Heart ability, wait for the right timing to cross the Crystal Crawlers (wait for the leftmost Crystal Crawler to almost end emitting its laser), then quickly let go of the assigned SUPER DASH button to use the Crystal Heart ability to fly across the gap and the Crystal Crawlers. The Knight will then hit a wall with a platform below.
- Next, head up the platform using the Mantis Claw or Monarch Wings ability, then take the exit on the left.
- The Knight will now be in a room filled with crystals. Head to the left, drop down on the gap, and see something glowing on top of a crystal. Inspect the glowing thing; the Knight has now obtained the Deep Focus charm!
To exit this area, simply head back up the shaft, head to the right, exit the room, then, instead of dropping down on the platform below, jump across it then jump up the platforms on the right, and there you will see a long path with a conveyor belt on the floor. Head to the right, and then, at the end of the path, you will see that part of the floor is breakable. Simply walk or stand on it to break it, drop down, then take the exit on the right.
Other Charms go well with the Deep Focus charm, specifically, the Spore Shroom charm, which releases a cloud of spores around the Knight that can deal damage to enemies whenever the Knight heals or uses Focus, and, if paired with the Deep Focus charm, the radius of the cloud of spores released is increased by 35%.
The Quick Focus charm decreases the time when the Knight uses Focus by up to 33%, and, if paired with the Deep Focus charm, the effect of the Deep Focus charm that decreases the speed of using Focus will be canceled out, meaning the Knight can heal two Masks while using Focus at almost its regular speed. The Stalwart Shell charm increases the invincibility frames and reduces the recoil whenever the Knight is hit, and if paired with the Deep Focus charm, the increased invincibility frames could give the Knight time to heal.
Now that the Knight has the Deep Focus charm, the Knight can equip it while sitting down on a Bench, and the Knight will heal two Masks when using Focus but will take more time using Focus!
