Although most bosses tend to be alone, some carry an additional threat with other enemies to back them up. One such boss is Esgar, Priest of Blood, accompanied by deadly dogs. This guide will cover everything you need to know about Esgar and how you can defeat it.
Esgar, Priest of Blood Overview
Esgar, Priest of Blood, is a humanoid optional field boss. It is feeble but can still prove quite a challenge to overcome. Let’s get into the nitty-gritty.
Health bar: Esgar, Priest of Blood, will have approximately 8006 HP in your first playthrough. But you will also have to worry about the dogs’ health bars during the battle.
Types of damage: Esgar mainly deals physical damage. However, the boss and their compatriots can inflict blood loss as well.
Weapons: Esgar equips a dagger.
Weaknesses: The Priest of Blood is weak to Hemorrhage, Fire, and Lightning.
Parrying: He can be parried. Just do not try parrying the dogs.
Esgar, Priest of Blood Location: To get to Esgar, Priest of Blood, you need to head deep into the Lyndell catacombs, located underneath the Royal Capital. The Catacombs can be accessed through the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds. Be careful while making your way through this region, as it is crammed with enemies.
Movesets:
- Swarm of Flies: Esgar releases a ‘swarm of flies’ that attack you, inflicting damage and causing blood loss buildup. Even though this attack has good tracking, dodging the initial projectile can be an effective defense.
- Bloodflame Talons: Esgar slashes with its magical claws, causing an explosion after a delay. You can avoid taking damage from this by staying away from Esgar until the explosion’s impact subsides.
- Bloody slash: Esgar makes a broad horizontal swipe, which can be easily avoided by rolling away from it.
- Jumping attack: Esgar strikes with its dagger, covering a decent area. You can easily dodge these attacks and land a few hits if you memorize the pattern.
Pre-fight Preparation
Ensure that you are leveled up
You should be at least level 70 and have enough vigor in the bank before embarking on this journey. Before going toe to toe with Esgar, you will need to go through other foes prowling in the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds.
Get some Invigorating Cursed Meat
There will be blood. So, it is better to pack something like Invigorating Cured Meat to prevent the buildup of Bleed effects.
Acquire the Beast Repellant Torch
You should also acquire the ‘Beast Repellant Torch’ to help you deal with the dogs. The torch should keep the dogs at bay, allowing you to focus more on Esgar.
Fighting Strategy
You are in the thick of it now, and you need a fighting strategy. Before getting into build-specific strategies, let’s go over some general tips to fight Esgar, Priest of Blood.
Summon Spirit Ashes
Before the dogs distract you from the boss fight, you should use summon spirit ash to distract the dogs.
Go after dogs first
If the Spirit Ashes are not your cup of tea, you can always try dealing with dogs and Esgar on your own. Put an end to Esgar’s dogs first, as these treacherous creatures can inflict bleed damage and end your run prematurely.
Melee Users
Take advantage of Edgar’s low poise
Thanks to its low poise, a few solid hits from any reasonably good melee weapon should be enough to stagger Esgar. At the same time, you need to be on your toes, as one hit from Esgar can prove to be the difference between life and death. But if you want an extra edge, go with something like the Rivers of Blood Katana as it mounts up the Bleed damage in no time.
Beware of his Swarm of Flies and Bloodflame Talons attacks
You can easily get in a few hits after Esgar’s jumping attack, but be ready for Esgar’s Swarm of Flies and the Bloodflame Talons attacks afterward. If you are not careful, these attacks can take a big chunk of your health.
Magic and Ranged Users
Fret not. The playstyle is quite different for magic and ranged users. We have got you covered in that department as well.
Focus on AoE damage
Esgar can easily evade spells and attacks, so focusing on inflicting AoE damage is better.
Use the arena to your advantage
The pillars in the area will be their saving grace for the magic and ranged builds. Make sure that you use the pillars to protect yourself from the attacks of Esgar, Priest of Blood, to avoid taking any unnecessary damage.
The final blow
After you are done dealing with AoE damage, all you need to do is finish off Esgar and his canines using powerful spells. Something like Ekzykes’s Decay will come in handy here. If you are rocking a ranged build, ensure that you have invested at least 35-40 points in the mind attribute (FP).
Rewards
If you are successful in killing Esgar, Priest of Blood, your rewards will be as follows:
- 30000 runes;
- Lord of Blood’s Exultation talisman;
With that, we come to the end of our guide. The battle might be difficult to overcome, but if you use the knowledge and stick to the strategies mentioned in our guide, you should breeze past Esgar with ease.
