In Pokemon Scarlet and Violet‘s main story, the player can battle the massive new Titan Pokemon, challenge all the Gym Leaders in the Paldea region, face the mysterious Team Star, compete in the Pokemon League to become a Champion, and be the very best like no one ever was, and catch every Pokemon in the region because, y’know, gotta catch ’em all!

Pokemon Scarlet/Violet: How to Defeat Tyme in the Academy Ace Tournament

After completing all these, players can still engage in post-game challenges, such as rematches with Pokemon Gym Leaders and former Team Star squads, immediately following the final mission and the credits roll.

The Academy Ace Tournament is one of these special events/missions that the player can participate in, and it commemorates the player’s achievement of becoming the Paldea region’s Champion.

In this guide, you will learn how to defeat Tyme in the Academy Ace Tournament!

The Academy Ace Tournament

To gain access to the Academy Ace Tournament, the player must first assist Top Champion Geeta by challenging all Pokemon Gym Leaders in the region to a rematch so that they can demonstrate their abilities and Top Champion Geeta can participate in the tournament. Only after defeating all Gym Leaders in the region again will the Academy Ace Tournament be unlocked.

The player will face four consecutive battles against Pokemon Trainers in the Academy Ace Tournament. These trainers are either academy faculty or other students. The player must defeat each of the four Trainers to be crowned the ultimate champion and named the academy’s ace

If the player wants to participate in the Academy Ace Tournament, visit the Academy in Mesagoza, head to the Entrance Hall, and talk to the staff member in the blue shirt standing next to a Gengar at the front desk.

For the player’s first-ever attempt in the Academy Ace Tournament, the player will engage with a fixed group of four Pokemon Trainers: Arven, Jacq, Dendra, and Top Champion Geeta. For the player’s subsequent attempts, however, the player will face four random Trainers. These are chosen from Arven, Jacq, Dendra, Hassel, Tyme, Miriam, Raifort, Saguaro, Salvatore, Penny, Director Clavell, or Nemona.

After each battle during the tournament, the player cannot alter the Pokemon in their party. The player’s Pokemon, however, will have their HP restored, and the player’s Tera Orb will be recharged after each battle.

Rewards

Aside from money and EXP points, becoming the ultimate champion in the Academy Ace Tournament for the first time unlocks the Sporty Cap (Pokemon League) and 6-Star Tera Raids (if the player has completed at least ten 4-Star Tera Raid battles).

For a player’s subsequent victories of the whole tournament, the following prizes may be awarded at random: a maximum of 10 Rare Candies, a maximum of three Nuggets, one Big Nugget, a maximum of 3 PP Ups, a PP Max, three random Vitamins, three random Tera Shards, a rare Apriball (a Beast Ball, a Dream Ball, a Fast Ball, a Friend Ball, a Level Ball, a Lure Ball, or a Moon Ball), a Mint with a random nature, a Bottle Cap, a Gold Bottle Cap, or a scarce Ability Patch.

Tyme in the Ace Academy Tournament

If the player participates in the Academy Ace Tournament again after becoming the academy’s ace for the first time, the player may face Tyme, the academy’s mathematics teacher!

Tyme’s Lycanroc (Midday Form)

With that in mind, it is important to note that Lycanroc (Midday Form) is a Rock-type Pokemon that is weak (super effective) to Fighting-type, Grass-type, Ground-type, Steel-type, and Water-type moves and resistant (not very effective) to Fire-type, Flying type, Normal-type, and Poison-type moves.

Tyme’s Lycanroc (Midnight Form)

Lycanroc (Midnight Form) is also a Rock-type Pokemon that is weak (super effective) to Fighting type, Grass type, Ground-type, Steel-type, and Water-type moves and resistant (not very effective) to Fire-type, Flying-type, Normal-type, and Poison-type moves.

Tyme’s Lycanroc (Midnight Form) will use the following moves:

  • Stone Edge is a physical Rock-type move with 100 Power and 80 Accuracy with a 1-stage increased Critical Hit ratio.
  • Crunch is a physical Dark-type move with 80 Power and 100 Accuracy. In addition to inflicting damage, it has a 20% chance of lowering the enemy’s Defense stat by one stage.

Tyme’s Drednaw

Drednaw is a Water and Rock-type Pokemon, which means it is weak (super effective) to Electric-type, Fighting-type, Ground type, and especially Grass-type moves and resistant (not very effective) to Flying-type, Ice-type, Normal-type, Poison-type, and especially Fire-type moves.

Tyme’s Drednaw will use the following moves:

  • Ice Fang is a physical Ice-type move with 65 Power and 95 Accuracy. Aside from causing damage, it also has a 10% chance of inflicting Freeze or flinch.
  • Rock Blast is a physical Rock-type move with 25 Power and 90 Accuracy. It will damage the opposing Pokemon two to five times in a row (37.5% chance to hit the opposing Pokemon two times, 37.5% chance to hit three times, 12.5% chance to hit four times, and 12.5% chance to hit five times).
  • Razor Shell is a physical Water-type move with 75 Power and 95 Accuracy. Aside from inflicting damage, it also has a 50% chance of decreasing the enemy’s Defense stat by one stage.
  • Jaw Lock is a physical Dark-type move with 80 Power and 100 Accuracy. In addition to dealing damage, it stops Pokemon from escaping or being switched out until one faints.

Also, Tyme’s Drednaw has the Ability called Strong Jaw, which raises the damage of the Pokemon with the Ability’s Biting moves by 50%. In Tyme’s Drednaw case, the moves that will have increased damage are Ice Fang and Jaw Lock.

Tyme’s Stonjourner

Stonjourner is also a Rock-type Pokemon which means that it is weak (super effective) to Fighting-type, Grass-type, Ground-type, Steel-type, and Water-type moves and resistant (not very effective) to Fire-type, Flying-type, Normal-type, and Poison-type moves.

Tyme’s Stonjourner will use the following moves:

  • Heavy Slam is a physical Steel-type move with 100 Accuracy. It has an attack power depending on the target Pokemon’s weight. This move’s Power can go as low as 20 if the target Pokemon is 50% of the attacking Pokemon’s weight. It can also go as high as 120 Power if the target Pokemon weighs less than 20% of the attacking Pokemon’s.
  • Body Press is a physical Fighting-type move with 80 Power and 100 Accuracy. Rather than the Attack stat, the attacking Pokemon’s Defense is used to calculate the amount of damage.
  • Stone Edge, a physical Rock-type move with 100 Power and 80 Accuracy, also has a 1-stage increased Critical Hit ratio.
  • Earthquake is a physical Ground-type move with 100 Power and 100 Accuracy. It will hit all Pokemon in the battle and inflict double damage to Pokemon using the move Dig.

Aside from its moves, Tyme’s Stonjourner has the Power Spot ability. It will increase its ally Pokemon’s attack power by 30%.

Tyme’s Coalossal

Coalossal is a Fire and Rock-type Pokemon, which means it is weak (super effective) to Fighting-type, Rock-type, and especially Ground-type and Water-type moves and resistant (not very effective) to the Bug-type, Fairy-type, Flying-type, Ice-type, Normal-type, Poison-type, and especially Fire-type moves.

Tyme’s Coalossal will use the following moves:

  • Heat Crash is a physical Fire-type move with 100 Accuracy with an attack power based on the opposing Pokemon’s weight. So the lighter/heavier the opposing Pokemon is, the greater/lesser the power. This move’s power can go as high as 120 if the opposing Pokemon is less than 20% of the attacking Pokemon’s weight. It can also go as low as 20 if the opposing Pokemon weighs 50% of the attacking Pokemon.
  • Heavy Slam is a physical Steel-type move with 100 Accuracy that, again, has an attack power based on the target Pokemon’s weight, so the lighter the target Pokemon is, the greater the damage dealt.
  • Body Press is a physical Fighting-type move with 80 Power and 100 Accuracy where the Defense stat of the Pokemon using the move is used to calculate the amount of damage that will be dealt instead of its Attack stat.
  • Stone Edge is a physical Rock-type move with 100 Power and 80 Accuracy with a 1-stage increased Critical Hit ratio.

Aside from that, Tyme’s Coalossal has the Ability called Steam Engine, which will raise the Pokemon with the Ability’s Speed stat by 6 stages if it is hit with a Fire-type or Water-type attack.

Tyme’s Garganacl

Garganacl is a Rock-type Pokemon, and as Tyme will Terastallize her Garganacl, it will still be a Rock-type because of its Tera Type. Hence, it is weak (super effective) in Fighting-type, Grass-type, Ground-type, Steel-type, and Water-type and resistant (not very effective) to Fire-type, Flying-type, Normal-type, and Poison-type.

Tyme’s Garganacl will use the following moves:

  • Stone Edge is a physical Rock-type move with 100 Power and 80 Accuracy with a 1-stage increased Critical Hit ratio.
  • Fire Punch is a physical Fire-type move with 75 Power and 100 Accuracy. In addition to dealing damage, it has a 10% chance of inflicting Burn on the target Pokemon.
  • Ice Punch is a physical Ice-type move with 75 Power and 100 Accuracy. Aside from inflicting damage, it also has a 10% chance of inflicting Freeze on the opposing Pokemon.
  • Thunder Punch is a physical Electric-type move with 75 Power and 100 Accuracy. In addition to causing damage, it has a 10% chance of paralyzing the target Pokemon.

Aside from that, Tyme’s Garganacl has the Purifying Salt Ability, which protects the Pokemon with the Ability from being inflicted with status conditions and also halves the damage received from Ghost-type moves.

Tyme Ace Academy tournament Tips

As Tyme’s Pokemon are Level 65 and 66, it is recommended that the player use Level 67 and higher Pokemon with Fighting-type, Grass-type, and Ground-type moves.

This is because even though Fighting-type and Ground-type moves will deal super effective damage to all of Tyme’s Pokemon and Grass-type moves will deal super effective damage to all of Tyme’s Pokemon except for Coalossal, it is advised to use Fighting-type and Ground-type Pokemon and use their main type moves against Tyme’s Lycanroc (Midnight Form) as these types are resistant to some of  Lycanroc’s moves while dealing super effective damage.

Use a Pokemon with Grass-type moves and a high Speed stat against Tyme’s Drednaw as it is four times weak to Grass-type moves; use Fighting-type, Grass-type, and Water-type moves against Tyme’s Stonjourner; use Ground-type moves against Tyme’s Coalossal as it is four times weak to Ground-type moves (it is also four times weak to Water-type moves but there is a chance that Coalossal’s Steam Engine Ability will be activated if it is hit with Water-type moves); and use Fighting-type Pokemon with its Fighting-type moves against Tyme’s Terastallized Garganacl.

With the right Pokemon and moves, the player can easily defeat Tyme, the academy’s savvy statistician mathematics teacher, in the Academy Ace Tournament and continue to the next round!
