Learn how to complete the Medali Gym in Pokemon Scarlet/Violet!
In the open-world video game Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, the player enrolls in a huge school in the Paldea Region as a transfer student. In the game, the player and only the player gets to do anything they wish to do: whether to track down Titan Pokemon, defeat every Pokemon Gym, become the champion and the very best like no one ever was, to thwart the evil Team Star, or simply to complete the Pokedex and catch them all!
In this article, we will discuss taking down Pokemon Gyms, which are a part of the “Victory Road” quest line, specifically the Normal type gym in Medali City in Pokemon Scarlet/Violet!
Medali Gym in Pokemon Scarlet/Violet
The Medali Gym can be found in the northern part of, well, Medali City, which can be found directly northwest of the Great Crater of Paldea and can be reached by following the main path northeast of Porto Marinada through West Province (Area Two) and West Province (Area Three) (or can be found northeast of Cascarrafa and the Asado Desert or southwest of Glaseado Mountain).
Gym Test
Before the player can start battling against the Gym Leader of a Pokemon Gym, there is a new mechanic in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet where the player must complete a Gym Test to prove that the player can take on the Gym Leader. Every Pokemon Gym has its Gym Test, and the Gym Test in the Medali Gym is to order the secret menu item!
To start the Medali Gym Test, let the player head inside the Medali Gym and talk to the receptionist just before the entrance. Then, the receptionist will tell the player that the player must first complete the Gym Test to face the Gym Leader, Larry, which means finding out and ordering the secret menu item in Treasure Eatery, a much-loved restaurant in the city.
The receptionist will then explain that there are three other Gym Test challenges, and each will be given a clue that will help discover the secret dish so that the player will be given a clue as well. The player must find the other Gym Test challengers and battle them as the loser must tell the winner their clue.
The receptionist will continue that the player must gather and use the clues to find the secret dish and order it from the waiter at Treasure Eatery. The receptionist will then tell the player their clue, which is to find out how the regulars season their dishes.
Player Clue
After talking to the receptionist, the player must follow the given clue. Head out of the gym and inside the Treasure Eatery in the northeastern city just south of the Medali (East) Pokemon Center.
The regular that the player must talk to is a man wearing a dark gray suit, who can be found sitting on the southernmost seat of the bar area on the northwesternmost part of the Treasure Eatery. Talk to the man, select ‘Are you a regular here?’ from the prompt, and he will tell the player that a nice squeeze of lemon gives any dish a refreshing kick.
With that information, it can be concluded that Lemon is the answer to the riddle, which is the player’s clue; the player must find the other three Gym Test challengers and figure out their clues.
Gym Test Challenger 1 Clue
One of the Gym Test challengers is a very young student and can be found just across the street from the entrance of Treasure Eatery. The player can easily find her because the young student will have a speech balloon over their head that says, “I’m gonna beat the Medali Gym!” with a black arrow. Talk to the young student, and a battle will commence with the clues at stake!
This Gym Test challenger will use two Pokemon: a Level 34 Gumshoos and a Level 34 Greedent. With that in mind, it is important to note that Gumshoos and Greedent are both Normal-type Pokemon that are weak (super effective) to Fighting-type moves and immune (no effect) to Ghost-type moves.
After defeating this young Gym Test challenger, talk to her again, and she will tell the player her clue, which is to look for something odd out at one of the ice cream stands.
To solve this, head to the food stands on the western part of the Gym Test challenger and talk to the merchant of the ice cream stand on the right to look at what they are selling.
At the bottom of the list are Grilled Rice Balls, which are the odd ones as they are supposed to sell ice cream. With that information, it can be concluded that the answer to the riddle that is the first Gym Test Challenger’s clue is Grilled Rice Balls.
Gym Test Challenger 2 Clue
The next Gym Test challenger is a female student and can be found on the right side of the Medali Gym building in the western part of the city. The player can easily find her because the student will have a speech balloon over their head that says, “I’ve got to order that secret dish…” with a black arrow. Talk to the student, and a battle will commence with the clues at stake!
This Gym Test challenger will only use one Pokemon, which is a Level 34 Ursaring. With that in mind, it is important to note that Ursaring is also a Normal-type Pokemon that is weak (super effective) to Fighting-type moves and immune (no effect) to Ghost-type moves.
After defeating this Gym Test challenger, talk to her again, and she will tell the player her clue: to look for a dark spot surrounded by stairs. To solve this, head to the amphitheater just ahead of the Gym Test challenger, head down the stairs, head towards the closed gate at the bottom, then press the A button, and there the player will find a faint writing that says “Fire Blast.” With that information, it can be concluded that the answer to the riddle that is the second Gym Test Challenger’s clue is Fire Blast.
Gym Test Challenger 3 Clue
The final Gym Test challenger is a male student and can be found near the sandwich shop and canned food shop in the southern part of the city. The player can easily find him because the student will have a speech balloon over their head that says, “Anyone here taking the Gym Test?!” with a black arrow. Talk to the student, and a battle will commence with the clues at stake!
This Gym Test challenger will only use one Pokemon, which is a Level 34 Dunsparce. With that in mind, it is important to note that Dunsparce is also a Normal-type Pokemon that is weak (super effective) to Fighting-type moves and immune (no effect) to Ghost-type moves.
After defeating this Gym Test challenger, talk to him again, and he will tell the player his clue, which is to listen closely to the bluebird Pokemon. To solve this, follow the path that heads to the northeast of the city, and on a crossing, the player will see a cabbie with a talking Squawkabilly.
Simply stand near the cabbie with his blue Squawkabilly, and the Squawkabilly will keep talking and eventually say, “Meedyum! Meedyum!”. With that information, it can be concluded that the answer to the riddle that is the last Gym Test Challenger’s clue is Medium.
The Secret Dish
After defeating all the other Gym Test challenges and solving their clues, head back to the Treasure Eatery in the northeastern city and talk to the waiter inside just before the entrance. The waiter will then ask what the player will be ordering, so select ‘Grilled rice balls’ (from the clue from the first Gym Test challenger) on the prompt; the waiter will ask what size serving the player will be having, so select ‘Medium serving’ (from the clue from the third Gym Test challenger) on the prompt, the waiter will ask how the player wants it to cook so select ‘Extra crispy, Fire Blast style’ (from the clue from the second Gym Test challenger) on the prompt, and, finally, the waiter will ask if the player wants anything to garnish the order so select ‘Lemon’ (from the player’s clue) on the prompt.
After that, the waiter will shout it to the restaurant’s chef, and the whole place will rumble and reveal a battle court! The waiter will then confirm that the player has passed the gym test and has the right to challenge the gym leader!
Gym Leader Larry
After completing the Gym Test in Pokemon Scarlet/Violet, talk to the waiter again (or heal your Pokemon first if you want) and confirm on the prompt that the player is ready to challenge the Medali Gym Leader, Larry the Exceptional Everyman, and the player will now be brought to the battle court which is was just revealed after the Gym Test.

After that, it will be revealed that the regular that the player spoke to during the Gym Test is Medali’s Gym Leader, Larry, who will congratulate the player for completing the Gym Test. As mentioned, the Medali Gym is a normal-type gym, meaning Gym Leader Larry will mostly use Normal-type Pokemon.
Gym Leader Larry will use three Pokemon: a Level 35 Komala, a Level 35 Dudunsparce, and a Level 36 Staraptor with a Normal Tera type. Gym Leader Larry will use these Pokemon in this order and terastallize Staraptor, changing it from a Normal and Ice-type to a pure Normal-type.
With that in mind, it is worth mentioning that Komala is a Normal-type Pokemon, meaning it is weak (super effective) to Fighting-type moves and immune (no effect) to Ghost-type moves. Larry’s Komala has an ability called Comatose, which allows the Pokemon, using the ability, always to be treated as if it were asleep but can still attack normally.
The attacks and abilities affected by Sleep also apply, like Sleep Talk, Snore, Hex, Wake-Up, Slap, Dream eaters, nightmares, and Bad Dreams. Larry’s Komala may use the following moves: Yawn, Slam, and Sucker Punch.
Dudunsparce is also a Normal-type Pokemon, which is weak (super effective) to Fighting-type moves and immune (no effect) to Ghost-type moves. Larry’s Dudunsparce may use the following moves: Drill Run, Glare, and Hyper Drill.
Staraptor will become a Normal-type because of its Tera type, and as Gym Leader, Larry will terastallize it. It is weak (super effective) to Fighting-type moves and immune (no effect) to Ghost-type moves. Larry’s Staraptor has the Ability called Intimidate, which will lower the opposing Pokemon’s Attack stat by one stage whenever the Pokemon using the Ability enters the battlefield. Larry’s Staraptor may use the following moves: Facade and Aerial Ace.
Because Gym Leader Larry’s Pokemon are Level 35 and 36, It is recommended that the player’s Pokemon be at least Level 36 to defeat Gym Leader Larry a little bit easier.
After defeating Gym Leader Larry, the player will receive the Normal-type Gym Badge and TM025, a move called Facade. Facade is a physical Normal type move where, if used, damage dealt to the opposing Pokemon will be doubled if the Pokemon using the move is afflicted with Burn, Paralysis, Poison, or Toxic Poison. Facade has 70 Power, 100 Accuracy, and 20 PP.
Now that the player has defeated Gym Leader Larry and completed the Medali Gym in Pokemon Scarlet/Violet, the player is one step closer to completing the ‘Victory Road’ quest line and becoming the Champion in the Paldea Region!
