How To Get Rupees in Tears of the Kingdom

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is a new entry to the franchise and is an immersive and captivating game that takes players on a grand adventure through the vast land, skies, and depths of Hyrule.

As Link traverses the enormous landscapes and encounters various challenges, acquiring Rupees becomes essential. The people of Hyrule use rupees as money, which means they’re needed to purchase items and upgrade equipment.

In that case, it is necessary to progress through the story. This guide will explore different methods and strategies to get Rupees in Tears of the Kingdom. This will ensure that players have the resources necessary to conquer the trials that lie ahead.

Whether you’re a seasoned adventurer or new to the series, these tips will assist you in amassing wealth and thriving in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

Rupees in Tears of the Kingdom

Rupees have been a staple of The Legend of Zelda series since its inception. And they continue to play an important role in the latest installment, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. In The Legend of Zelda, Rupees are the primary currency form. Link can use Rupees to purchase essential items, upgrade equipment, and unlock various services and features.

In Tears of the Kingdom, Rupees retain their iconic appearance. They take the form of shining little gemstones of various colors. These gemstones come in different denominations, including green, blue, red, purple, and rare silver and gold variants. Each color represents different values in different Zelda games. The following are their specific values in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom:

How to Get Rupees in Tears of the Kingdom

Throughout your journey in Tears of the Kingdom, Link can get Rupees in a variety of ways, but some of the most common ways include:

1. Sell Items

A screenshot showing a seller's inventory in Tears of the Kingdom

The main way to get Rupees is by selling items. Link can sell every item in his inventory except for the Bows, Shields, Weapons, Zonai Devices, and Key Items. The Rupees Link will receive for selling items differ from item to item. The more common an item is, the less Rupees Link will receive for selling it. The rarer an item is, the more Rupees Link will receive for it.

Link can head to any merchants in the game to sell items and ask them to look at what items Link has. Link can head to villages and settlements, like the Kakariko Village and Lookout Landing, to find merchants. Also, Link can sell items to Beedle in any of the Stables. Alternatively, Link can also find traveling merchants roaming the roads of Hyrule.

As mentioned, Link can sell almost every item in his inventory. However, the following are the items recommended to sell:

Meals and Elixirs

The items that will yield Link the most Rupees are cooked meals. That means Link can cook various ingredients, especially different meats, and sell them for many Rupees. The rarer the ingredients used are, and the higher the quality of cooked meals, the more Rupees Link will receive for selling them

Like cooked meals, Link can also sell Elixirs for many Rupees. Link can cook monster parts and critters, like fireflies and crickets, to make Elixirs. Also, similar to cooked meals, the higher the quality and the rarer the ingredients utilized, the more Rupees Link will get in return for selling them.

Gemstones

Gemstones are another set of items that Link can sell for many Rupees. Link can mainly obtain gemstones by breaking ore deposits. There are lots of these in caves and the Depths. Another way of obtaining gems is by defeating Stone Taluses. Aside from gems, these Stone Taluses also drop Rupees once defeated.

Gemstones can be used as fusion materials for weapons and shields. Some gems give elemental effects, while others improve the weapon’s durability. We don’t know about you, but we think the gemstones are worth more than just fusing weapons. That is entirely up to you. These are the gemstones that Link will find in the game and their selling price:

GemstoneSelling Price
Amber10 Rupees
Luminous Stone20 Rupees
Opal30 Rupees
Topaz80 Rupees
Ruby110 Rupees
Sapphire150 Rupees
Diamond500 Rupees

It is also worth mentioning that a merchant will buy gemstones from Link for better prices. This merchant is named Ramella, and Link can find this NPC in Goron City. Link, however, can only sell gems to Ramella in bulk. This means that Link must have a lot of specific gems to be able to sell them to her. With Ramella, ink may sell gemstones for about 20% more than other merchants. To sell to Ramella, Link must first complete the main quests in the Eldin region.

Armor and Clothing

Aside from that, another category of items that sell for a good amount of Rupees is armor and clothing. The amount of Rupees they yield also depends on the actual armor and clothing and the number of times it has been upgraded. However, as armor and clothing are very useful, especially in the early game, selling armor the player does not want is only recommended if the player has extra pieces to spare.

Star Fragments

One of the most valuable items in the game is Star Fragments. Link must follow falling stars that drop to the ground to get some. Sometimes, they drop fairly close to Link; sometimes, they drop very far away. Once they drop, though, the player will see a light on the horizon, which tells the player exactly where it is.

Link can sell Star Fragments for 200 Rupees per piece. However, it is important to note that Star Fragments are used to upgrade armor. So, selling them once the player has run out of uses is recommended.

2. Complete Side Adventures

A screenshot showing Link in the wild in Tears of the Kingdom

Link will get Rupees as a reward for completing a few Side Adventures, like the Potential Princess Sightings. One particular side quest that rewards Link with Rupees involves Addison. While exploring the vast land of Hyrule, Link will find Addison trying to prop up signs for President Hudson.

Link must help Addison let the sign stand up using materials found in the area and the Ultrahand ability. After doing that, Addison will properly prop the signup and reward Link. Among these are Rupees!

3. The Overworld

A screenshot showing a Blupee in Tears of the Kingdom

Aside from all the abovementioned ways, Link can just find Rupees all over the map. Here are the various ways to find Rupees all over Hyrule:

Rocks

Link can uncover pieces of Rupees by picking up pieces of rocks all over the map of Hyrule. Sometimes there are Rupees under there, Restless Crickets, and sometimes there isn’t anything there. Might as well check under them, right?

Treasure Chests

Link may find Rupees inside Treasure Chests. So, make sure to open every treasure chest Link comes across. Also, there is a method to hunt treasure chests: using the Sensor+ to track treasure chests! With the Sensor+ set to search for treasure chests, the sensor will react if a treasure chest is nearby. The closer Link is to a treasure chest, the stronger the Sensor+ will react.

To get the Sensor and upgrade it to the Sensor+, Link must first acquire the Camera and the Autobuild ability. Then, Link must head to the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab in Hateno Village to get the Sensor. Follow the instructions from there, and Robbie will upgrade it to Sensor+!

Blupees

While wandering around the vast landscapes of Hyrule, Link will sometimes find a blue, glowing, rabbit-like creature called a Blupee. Once the player finds one, we know it sounds cruel, but shoot it with arrows, and it will drop a few Rupees. Blupees, however, are nimble and will run away when they notice Link.

As a tip, once the player spots one, quickly crouch to lessen the noise that Link generates when moving, then look for and head up a high point. From that high point, jump off it and aim Link’s Bow and Arrow.

This will slow down time and allow Link to shoot the Blupee multiple times. The length of the slow-mo part where Link can shoot will depend on the height of the platform that Link jumped off from and the amount of stamina Link has.

Aside from finding them in the overworld, Link can find Blupees after eliminating Bubbulfrogs, also blue and glowing creatures, inside caves. Once Link does that, the Bubbulfrog will drop a Bubbul Gem, and a Blupee will appear and quickly run away. Compared to the Blupees in the overworld, it’s harder to shoot the Blupees in caves because they will immediately run away.

How to Get Rupees Fast

The methods above are the most basic ways to come upon Rupees in Tears of the Kingdom. In this part, we will discuss how Link can quickly get Rupees. There are also lots of ways to do that, but here are the best ones:

Method 1: Sell Meat Skewers

A screenshot showing a meat skewer in Tears of the Kingdom

Link can sell Meat Skewers prepared from Raw Prime Meat or, even better, Raw Gourmet Meat. The following are the required ingredients to make both kinds of Meat Skewers with their specific selling prices:

Link can eliminate the following creatures to get some Raw Prime Meat and Raw Gourmet Meat:

Meat Farming

There is a way to quickly acquire a lot of Raw Prime Meat and Raw Gourmet Meat. To do that, Link must do these:

  1. Fast travel to the Sikukuu Shrine. This Shrine is in the southeast of the Thyphlo Ruins Skyview Tower.
  2. Next, head to the right and go up the cliff. Then, head down from the Geoglyph found on the left.
  3. In this area, Link will find a red or silver Bokoblin riding a bear (around these coordinates: 0734, 3036, 0216). Once the player finds that, save your progress in a safe spot to reload if anything goes wrong.
  4. After that, eliminate the bear using Link’s Bow and Arrows.
  5. Next, quickly run towards it and pick up the Raw Prime Meat and Raw Gourmet Meat the bear dropped. It is important to do this as the Bokoblin may pick the meat up and eat it quickly.
  6. Then, save the game again in a safe spot and reload that save data.
  7. After that, a red or silver Bokoblin should be riding a bear again. The player can now repeat steps 4 to 6 until you are satisfied with the amount of meat Link has acquired.

It is recommended that Link acquire and equip the Bokoblin Mask while performing this method. This is because this headgear will help Link approach the Bokoblin and bear without them attacking Link. Link can acquire the Bokoblin Mask from Kotlin near Pico Pond after completing “The Hunt for Bubbul Gems!” Side Adventure.

Also, Link needs to acquire a lot of arrows to eliminate the bear repeatedly.

Cooking and Selling

After obtaining a lot of Raw Prime Meat and Raw Gourmet Meat, Link can now cook numerous Meat Skewers. Then, sell them to any merchant all over Hyrule. Cooking the Meat Skewers using the cooking pots in stables is recommended. Link can also immediately sell the Meat Skewers to Beedle, who always appears in stables.

Method 2: Talus Hunting

A screenshot showing a Stone Talus in Tears of the Kingdom

As previously mentioned, Link can get a few gemstones for defeating Taluses. A specific kind of Talus drops more gems than regular ones. This is the Rare Stone Talus. This kind of Talus has a rare ore deposit on it, and it also has a chance to drop Diamonds. Because of that, this Rupee farming method involves hunting for Rare Stone Taluses and selling their dropped Gemstones!

Link can find a Rare Stone Talus in the following locations:

Depths: northwest of the Abandoned Kakariko Mine
(or west of Arusakam Lightroot)

There is no need to worry when the player has already eliminated Rare Stone Talus. The defeated ones will appear again if there is a Blood Moon. Once that happens, Link can just return to their locations to fight them again.

How to Defeat a Stone Talus

When heading to the locations mentioned above, Link will first find a bunch of large rocks on the ground. Upon approaching it, the large rocks will move and emerge from the ground and reveal themselves to be Stone Talus!

Attacking the body of the Stone Talus will not affect it in any way. The only way to damage the Stone Talus is by attacking the ore deposit on its back. It is possible to shoot the ore deposit with an ar, row which will temporarily stun it. During that, Link can quickly climb on its back and attack the ore deposit using melee weapons. Then, the Stone Talus will eventually shake off Link, so we must repeat the process.

Alternatively, and the much easier way, is to do the following:

  1. First, head to the space under the Stone Talus.
  2. Here, quickly hold the L button and select the Ascend ability with the right stick. Activate the Ascend ability from under the Stone Talus to phase through it and emerge on top of it. Make sure to quickly Ascend from under the Stone Talus, as staying under it too long will cause the Stone Talus to stomp on Link.
  3. Next, quickly attack its ore deposit using powerful weapons to deal damage.
  4. Not long after that, the Stone Talus will shake off Link, so Link must repeat all the previous steps until the Stone Talus is defeated!

Selling Gemstones

Just like any other item, Link can sell gemstones to any merchant. As an alternative, as previously mentioned, Link can sell gems to Ramella in Goron City for better prices:

GemstoneRegular Selling PriceRamella Selling Price
Amber10 Rupees
Luminous Stone20 Rupees
Opal30 Rupees
Topaz80 Rupees100 Rupees
Ruby110 Rupees130 Rupees
Sapphire150 Rupees170 Rupees
Diamond500 Rupees550 Rupees

It is important to note that Link can only sell gems to Ramella in units of 10

To unlock Ramella, Link must finish the main quests in the Eldin region.

Conclusion

Getting Rupees in Tears of the Kingdom isn’t only a practical necessity but an exciting aspect of the game. Players can use the numerous ways and strategies indicated in this guide to maximize Rupee accumulation.

This will ensure that players have the resources to overcome challenges, acquire valuable items, and unlock new opportunities. So, explore thoroughly, eliminate enemies with skill, complete Side Adventures, and take advantage of every opportunity to acquire money.

With the player’s expanding fortune, they’ll be fully prepared to face the challenges ahead and leave their imprint on Hyrule. So, ready your weapons as it’s time to get some Rupees in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom!
