If you are new to Genshin Impact, you might have heard people talk about the “pity system” and having a 50/50 chance to win. It can be a little confusing, so we’ll explain it to you in the simplest way we can.
In addition to being an open-world action RPG, Genshin Impact is a gacha game. Gacha or gachapon is a type of toy vending machine that is very popular in Japan. The game implements the same mechanic for obtaining certain characters and weapons. Everything is based on luck.
On Genshin Impact’s wish banners, you can see a “History” button at the bottom of your screen. Clicking on this will show the results of all the previous wishes you made.
There are two types of pity systems in this game. One is for four-star items and the other is for the rarest five-star items.
For every 10 wishes you make, you are guaranteed to get at least one four-star item. This counter resets any time you get a four-star item regardless of whether it was on the 10th wish or not.
Let’s say you made 10 wishes in one go and the fifth item you got was a four-star, the pity system resets on that wish, and the sixth for that batch will once again be the first count of the next four-star pity round.
In the image above, after the four-star item on the left, the next four-star item was awarded on the fifth wish. Thus, the count was reset before it got to the 10th wish.
The pity for the five-star items is slightly different for weapon and character event banners. For the character banners, it is stated that in every 90 wishes you are guaranteed to get a five-star character. For the weapon banner, it is 80 wishes.
Similar to the four-star pity, the five-star pity counter resets whenever you receive a five-star reward.
Winning or Losing the 50/50 Chance
In Genshin Impact, the featured characters and weapons are constantly updated. This means that the drop rates for those items will be greatly increased.
However, it’s still a very small chance. So to make it less frustrating for players, another rule was added to the pity system.
Whenever the first four-star or five-star reward you get is not the featured character or weapon, the next time you get a four-star or five-star reward, it’s guaranteed to be the featured one.
This is where the 50/50 chance comes into play. When you say you won the 50/50 for the five-star banner, it means you got the featured item or character the first time you received a five-star reward.
Another thing to note is that for the character event banner, the pity count is carried over to the next event banner. So if the five-star reward you got is not the featured character and the event banner expired, the next time your five-star wish is granted, it will be the featured character.
Some players will take advantage of this rule by saving that guaranteed chance and not making any wishes until the character they want is featured.
