Chris Pratt may be voicing beloved Nintendo mascot Mario in an upcoming movie, but Aquaman star Jason Momoa has signed on for another (somewhat unexpected) video game adaptation.
As per The Ankler, Momoa is currently negotiating to star in a Minecraft movie. Though Minecraft is a generally animated world, the movie aims to be a live-action franchise. No details have been released about the film, but it is said that WB has been forced to start development since the studio was set to lose its rights to the IP in January.
Besides Momoa, the word is also going around that Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre) has been signed on to the project. So far, nothing official has been confirmed by WB.
With Momoa playing a particular type of character, we do not know how this Minecraft movie will work with him. That being said, I am expecting this film to go in a completely different direction than the usual video game adaptations. If The LEGO Movie managed to make a film about building blocks work, so can Minecraft.
With ‘serious’ properties like Uncharted and The Last of Us getting adaptations, Minecraft was probably the last IP I expected to get the movie treatment. There are many more video game projects to adapt, like Crash Bandicoot and even Fortnite. I guess we will have to wait and see what WB announces soon.
No release date has been set for the Minecraft adaptation, but you can play the game on PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, Android, and iOS.
