There’s nothing wrong with a little help – turn on Aim Assist to make gunfights less involved and more enjoyable in GTA 5.
You can play GTA 5 on a variety of platforms. Regardless of whether you’re on the PC, PlayStation, or Xbox, you’re going to get a similar gameplay experience when running around doing missions around Los Santos.
Nevertheless, because of the apparent differences in input devices/controllers, PC players will typically have an easier time when aiming weapons in GTA 5, thanks to the pinpoint precision of the humble mouse. But, a neat little in-game setting for consoles can even out the playing field for these platforms for GTA 5.
We’ll show you how to turn on Aim Assist for GTA 5 in this guide.
Does GTA 5 have auto-aim?
Yes. GTA 5 has an auto-aim feature that can make aiming with a controller easier in-game.
Compared to the previous games in the franchise, GTA 5 offers a more casual and approachable gameplay difficulty, as evidenced by the automatic HP regeneration mechanic in-game.
On top of that, there are four different Aim Assist options that players can use to make gunfights and heists more manageable in-game.
How to turn on Aim Assist for GTA 5
You can find the Aim Assist feature in GTA 5 by going into the pause menu, navigating to the Gamepad settings, and toggling Targeting Mode.
It is worth noting, however, that choosing any of the Free Aim options will place your online character into a GTA Online lobby with other players on the same Targeting Mode. The same is true for the Assisted Aim options.
In general, players on different Targeting Modes will not see each other online to help make aiming and targeting balanced for all players in the lobby.
- Enter the pause menu by tapping the ESC key on the keyboard, the Start button on Xbox/PS3, or the Options Button on PS4/PS5.
2. Select the ‘Settings’ tab:
3. Under the Gamepad section, navigate to ‘Targeting Mode’:
4. Select any of the available targeting options:
- Free Aim – default aiming mode. Players must use their joystick to move the crosshair towards the target.
- Free Aim Assisted – Very similar to Free Aim, joystick movement is smoothed out.
- Assisted-Aim Partial – Pressing the aim button will automatically move your character’s crosshair close to the target.
- Assisted-Aim Full – Pressing the ‘Aim’ button on the controller will snap your crosshair towards the closest target. Also tracks the target while moving.
Note: If you want to change your Aim Assist settings for GTA Online, you have to jump into a GTA 5 Story Mode character first to access the Targeting Mode options. After which, simply switch over to GTA Online with the Targeting Mode setting of your choice.
What is the best aim assist for GTA?
The best Aim Assist for GTA 5 is purely preference. Choosing one over the other Aim Assist options won’t give you an advantage in-game as well, as you will be lobbied up with other players with the same Aim Assist settings as yours anyway.
With that said, choose the Aim Assist option that best complements your aiming style in GTA 5 and GTA Online.
Snap-on Snap-off
There’s absolutely no shame in turning on Aim Assist for GTA 5, especially if you’re just trying to have fun in-game and don’t really see any point in playing gunfights too seriously.
In addition, whenever you’re playing online against other players with Aim Assist on, you’ll be queued with players who have the same level of Aim Assist active anyway.
With that said, we hope we have given you a good idea about how to turn on and use Aim Assist in GTA 5 through this guide.
