In pop-culture, Donkey Kong and Mario started out as enemies, and it looks like the Super Mario movie is going to be addressing that history. As per a new TV spot though, it’s revealed that the two won’t be enemies for long.

Mario and Donkey Kong Team-Up in New Spot for The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Check this out:

Though it seems that Mario and Donkey Kong will go up against each other in the beginning of the film, it looks like the invading Koopa Army will force the two to actually team-up. Other previews have revealed Kong getting his own power-up, but it’s fun to see more of Mario in the Tanuki suit which allows him to fly.

I’ll admit, this film already looks pretty crowded, but based on what we see in the trailers, Illumination seems to have made all the elements fit together well, from Mario’s Isekai journey into the Mushroom Kingdom to all the elements that look to be lifted straight out of the games.

Here’s the synopsis:

While working underground to fix a water main, Brooklyn plumbers Mario (Chris Pratt; Jurassic World and The LEGO Movie franchises) and brother Luigi (Charlie Day; It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) are transported down a mysterious pipe and wander into a magical new world. But when the brothers are separated, Mario embarks on an epic quest to find Luigi.

With the assistance of a Mushroom Kingdom resident Toad (Keegan-Michael Key; The Lion King) and some training from the strong-willed ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy;The Queen’s Gambit), Mario taps into his own power.

Watch out for The Super Mario Bros. Movie when it comes to cinemas on April 7.
