With PlayStation exclusives like The Last of Us and Uncharted getting adaptations, the last game fans thought would get a film is something like Gran Turismo, which doesn’t even have a story. Just in, we have the first trailer for a Gran Turismo movie, which comes from District 9 director Neill Blomkamp.
Check this out:
The official synopsis reads:
Based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough, the film is the ultimate wish-fulfillment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become a professional racecar driver.
Though having no real story could have looked like a problem for a franchise like Gran Turismo, it’s interesting that they got a plot based on something that happened.
The movie should also pique the interest of self-proclaimed cinephiles. Though they may not play GT games, the fact that the director behind sci-fi films like Elysium and Chappie is at the helm of this project should be a huge draw.
Blomkamp may not have been able to push forward with his RoboCop or Alien projects, but having him take on a racecar movie like Gran Turismo feels like something worth checking out.
Gran Turismo is expected to hit theaters Aug. 11. Gran Turismo 7 is now playable for PlayStation 4|5.
