In Pokemon Legends: Arceus, the player will join the Galaxy Expedition Team, or Galaxy Team for short, as an important member of the Survey Corps to learn further about the Hisui Pokemon.
One of the game’s main objectives is for the player to capture every species of Pokemon in the region to complete the Hisui Pokedex. In addition, the all-powerful Arceus orders the player to find every Pokemon in the area.
This guide will discuss everything you need to know about Magikarp in Pokemon Legends: Arceus!
Magikarp
Magikarp, the 80th Pokemon in the Hisuian Pokedex, is a Water-type Fish Pokemon with large red-orange scales on its body that resembles a fish, a pair of large, circular eyes with a single dot for pupils, pink lips on its mouth, long, yellow barbels, white pectoral and tail fins, and a yellow fin that looks like a crown on its back and a similar looking fin on its underside.
According to its Pokedex entry in the game, Magikarp is a feeble and pitiful Pokemon but very tough. Furthermore, it is unaffected by turbid water, which is why it can be found living in various environments.
Basic Information
Magikarp is a Water-type Pokemon that is weak (super effective) to Electric-type and Grass-type moves and resistant (not very effective) to Fire-type, Ice-type, Steel-type, and Water-type moves.
Magikarp’s base stats are 20 HP, 10 Attack, 55 Defense, 15 Special Attack, 20 Special Defense, and 80 Speed for 200.
Magikarp can be evolved into a Gyarados when it reaches Level 20.
Magikarp’s favorite foods are Hearty Grains and Plump Beans. These foods and berries can be used as food for Magikarp and a distraction before catching or battling it unawares.
If a Magikarp is defeated or captured, the player will receive two items: a Tumblestone and a Ball of Mud.
Location
To find a Magikarp, the player can head to the following locations:
In the waters of the Obsidian Fieldlands: a little bit south of the Obsidian Falls and around Lake Verity.
In the waters of the Coronet Highlands: along Fabled Spring.
The player can find Magikarp in these areas at all times of day and in all weather conditions.
It is important to note that the Magikarp that can be found slightly south of the Obsidian Falls in the Obsidian Fieldlands is a Level 55 Alpha Pokemon. This Alpha Magikarp can also be found here at all times of the day and in every weather condition.
Also, Magikarp can be found inside Massive Mass Outbreaks in the Cobalt Coastlands
Research Tasks
The following are the Research Tasks in Magikarp’s Pokedex entry in Pokemon Legends: Arceus:
Multiplier | Research Task | Objectives |
x2 | Number caught | 1/3/6/12/25 |
Number of large specimens you’ve caught | 1/2/3/5/7
Number defeated | 1/3/8/20/40
x2 | Times you have seen it use Splash | 1/5/20/50/100 |
Times you have given it food | 1/2/3/4/5
Number of different forms you have obtained | 2
x2 | Number you have evolved | 1/2/3/5/10 |
Once a Pokemon’s Pokedex entry reaches Research Level 10, it is complete. Every time one of a Research Task’s objectives is accomplished, a Pokedex entry’s Research Level increases by one level. After completing a Research Task objective with a multiplier of x2, the Pokedex entry gains two Research Levels rather than just one. In addition, the player receives Research Points for completing Pokedex entries and Research Tasks. The player’s Star Rank in the Galaxy Team will be increased if they accumulate enough Research Points.

To quickly complete Magikarp’s Pokedex entry, the player can feed a Magikarp food or berries five times, catch three Magikarp, then defeat one more. Doing all that will tick the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth objective of the “Times you’ve given it food” Research Task to raise its Research Level to five, tick the first and second objective of the “Number caught” Research Task to add four Research Levels thanks to its x2 multiplier, and tick the first objective of the “Number defeated” Research Task to gain the final Research Level needed to get to Research Level 100.
Moves
Unfortunately and famously, Magikarp can only learn one move in Pokemon Legends: Arceus:
Move | Type | Learn Level | Master Level | Power | Accuracy | PP |
Splash | Normal-type | 1 | n/a | 0 | – | 40 |
Relevant Request
Magikarp is involved in Request 39, called the “All About Magikarp” Request.
To unlock this request, the player must first encounter or catch a Magikarp and add it to the player’s Pokedex.
To start this request, go to the open space before the Galaxy Hall during the day. The player will find a little girl named Ceci in red and yellow clothing. Talk to Ceci, and she will ask about the Magikarp statue at the top of the Galaxy Hall. She will also ask several questions about the Magikarp, like what it does and if it can fly. Because of her curiosity, she will ask the player to show her Magikarp’s Pokedex entry once the player has completed it.
Again, to quickly complete Magikarp’s Pokedex entry, the player can feed it food or berries five times, catch three Magikarps, then defeat one.
After getting Magikarp’s Pokedex entry to Research Level 10, return to Ceci. She is still in the open space outside the Galaxy Hall in Jubilife Village. Talk to her, and she will look at Magikarp’s Pokedex entry and call herself a Magikarp professor.
Conclusion
She will then tell the player about a secret Sanqua told her. The secret is that Sanqua made the Magikarp statues at the top of the Galaxy Hall. She wanted to make Gyarados statues instead because they are strong, cool, and can fly.
Finally, the “All About Magikarp” Request is completed. The player will be rewarded with one Rare Candy for their efforts.
Magikarp is now easier to find, catch, and use in battle using all this information. Even though it seems useless (especially before evolving it to Gyarados), the player can still add Magikarp to the player’s party while taking on missions, requests, and even the all-powerful Arceus’ task for the player to catch ’em all!
