Making one of the franchise’s famous catchphrases, “Gotta catch ’em all,” reality is one of Pokemon Legends: Arceus’ objectives. In the game, the player joins the Survey Corps, whose goal is to discover as much as possible about the Pokemon that call the historic Hisui region home. The player will also be required to meet every Pokemon in the region by the legendary Pokemon Arceus. The player must therefore be acquainted with every Pokemon in the game.
This Pokemon Legends: Arceus Hippowdon guide will teach you everything you need to know about this Pokemon!
Pokémon Legends: Arceus Hippowdon
Hippowdon, the 108th Pokemon in the Hisuian Pokedex, is a Ground type Heavyweight Pokemon that has a large body that resembles a hippopotamus, a light brown body and dark gray back if it is a male, and a bluish-gray body and dark gray back if it is a female, a large, round snout, a muzzle with several holes, a large mouth with teeth that resemble pegs, a pair of red eyes with black pupils, and four black feet with four blunt claws on each foot.
The game’s Pokedex entry describes it as short-tempered and prone to violence, and it can create sand whirlwinds to crush its foes’ spirits before launching an attack.
Basic Information
Hippowdon is a Ground-type Pokemon that is weak (super effective) to Grass-type, Ice-type, and Water-type moves, resistant (not very effective) to Poison-type and Rock-type moves, and immune (no effect) to Electric-type moves.
This Pokemon’s base stats are 108 HP, 112 Attack, 118 Defense, 68 Special Attack, 72 Special Defense, and 47 Speed, for a total of 525.
Hippowdon can be evolved from a Hippopotas once it has reached Level 34.
Springy Mushrooms, Hearty Grains, and Plump Beans comprise Hippowdon’s preferred foods. Hippowdon can be distracted or fed with these items and berries, allowing it to be caught or battled while unaware.
When a Hippowdon is captured or defeated in the wild, the player is rewarded with a Sootfoot Root and a Ball of Mud.
Pokémon Legends: Arceus Hippowdon’s Location
The player can head to these areas to encounter a Hippowdon
In the Crimson Mirelands: in Scarlet Bog and Sludge Mound.
In the Coronet Highlands: in Celestica Trail.
It is important to mention that the player will encounter an Alpha Hippowdon west of Sludge Mound in the Crimson Mirelands. The Alpha Pokemon that can be found here is a Level 46 Pokemon.
The player can find Hippowdon in these areas at all times of the day and in every weather condition.
There is also a possibility that the player will come across a group of Hippowdon in the Crimson Mirelands and the Coronet Highlands if there are Massive Mass Outbreaks.
Research Tasks
The following are the Research Tasks in Hippowdon’s Pokedex entry:
Multiplier | Research Task | Objectives |
x2 | Number caught | 1/2/4/10/15 |
x2 | Number of alpha specimens caught | 1/2/3 |
Number defeated | 1/2/4/10/15
Number you have defeated with Ice-type moves | 1/2/6/12/25
Times you have seen it use Mud Bomb | 1/3/8/20/40
Times you have seen it use a strong style move | 1/3/8/20/40
Times you have stunned it by using items | 1/2/3/4/5

A Research Task objective can earn one Research Level, while a Research Task objective with a multiplier of x2 can be achieved to earn two Research Levels. A Pokemon’s Pokedex entry must reach Research Level 10 to be deemed finished.
By completing the objectives of Research Tasks and completing Pokedex entries, the player will accrue Research Points. A player’s Star Rank in the Galaxy Team will increase if they accumulate enough Research Points.
To quickly complete Hippowdon’s Pokedex entry, the player can stun the Alpha Hippowdon five times using items like Spoiled Apricorns and Balls of Mud, catch the Alpha Hippowdon, then use it in battle and use Mud Bomb once. Achieving all these will tick the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth objective of the “Times you have stunned it by using items” Research Task to gain five Research Levels, fulfill the first objective of the “Number caught” Research task to gain two Research Levels thanks to its x2 multiplier, fulfill the first objective of the “Number of alpha specimens caught” Research Task to gain two more Research Levels also thanks to its x2 multiplier, and, finally, tick the first objective of the “Times you’ve seen it use Mud Bomb” Research Task to get the final Research Level needed to reach Research Level 10.

Relevant Request
Hippowdon is involved in Request 40, called “The Charm Lost in the Swamp” Request.
Unlock
To unlock this request, the player must first receive the ‘A New Mission’ mission, the ninth mission of the game, where the player must return to Commander Kamado and report the player’s success after quelling the Lady of the Ridge Liligant’s frenzy.
Start
To start this request, go to the Bogbound Camp in the Crimson Mirelands, and there the player will find a member of the Security Corps named Yojiro near the entrance of the camp you will find. Talk to Yojiro, and he will say he was going to the Bogbound Camp from the Mirelands Camp when an alpha Hippowdon suddenly chased him. He’ll then say that he got away, but he dropped a charm he was carrying and wants it back, so he’ll ask the player to bring it back.
How to Complete
Yojiro’s charm can be found in the donut-shaped part of the swamp in Sludge Mound west of the Bogbound Camp. There, the player will see a glowing dot on the ground. Approach the glowing point, and a Hippowdon will appear.
The player must defeat the Hippowdon to obtain Yojiro’s charm. The Hippowdon that the player will face is a Level 34 Pokemon. Aside from defeating it, the player can throw a Poke Ball and catch the Hippowdon if desired.
After defeating or catching the Hippowdon, Yojiro will appear and be impressed by the player’s bravery in facing a large, angry Hippowdon. Then he’ll notice the glow in the swamp, approach it, and realize it’s his charm. He will then say that it means a lot to him that the player fought Hippowdon for him and that he will never lose the charm again after all the trouble the player went through.
Finally, the “The Charm Lost in the Swamp” Request is completed, and the player will be rewarded with five Iron Chunks and one Grit Gravel for your efforts.
With the knowledge from this Pokemon Legends: Arceus Hippowdon guide, the player can add it to their party and use it to complete missions, fulfill requests, or catch ’em all!
