The week may belong to God of War Ragnarok, but Netflix has just offered us an update on their adaptation for Gears of War.
As per The Hollywood Reporter, the hit Xbox IP Gears of War from developer The Coalition is getting a feature film from Netflix, and what’s more, it’s also going to get an adult animated series. Depending on the success of the projects, we would then be looking at more Gears of War adaptations down the line.
For now, no filmmakers have been attached to the project, but fans do know that Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy) has been very enthusiastic online about getting cast in an adaptation (should there be one, that is).
Here’s the synopsis:
The game is set on a planet on the brink of societal collapse when a monstrous threat in the form of underground creatures known as the Locust take humanity to the verge of extinction. Delta Squad, a ragtag fireteam led by disgraced sergeant Marcus Fenix, is now charged with leading humanity’s last stand.
With the uber-testosterone branding of Gears of War with their muscle-bound men and chainsaw guns, I think Bautista could be a solid first choice to cast, and then they can just move down the line from there. With all the gore and massive aliens that the game franchise has, I think Netflix will have to dish out a lot of money to be able to match the production value of the games.
No release date has been set for Gears of War yet, but I’m hoping we get some kind of update late 2023.
