Hiveblood Charm in Hollow Knight
Charms are in-game items that give the Knight special abilities and benefits. The Knight has to sit on a Bench and have sufficient empty Charm Notches to equip these Charms. An example of a Charm in Hollow Knight is the Hiveblood Charm.
When equipped, Hiveblood Charm will start to recover a Mask of the Knight’s health that lasts 10 seconds after not taking more damage. This will happen automatically so the Knight does not have to Focus to heal one Mask. Also, the Knight can equip this Charm to make the enemies inside the Hive passive.
The player can identify the recovering Mask as a little blob of oozing honey that grows gradually larger. If the Knight takes damage while regenerating, the recovery will restart. Hiveblood regenerates only one Mask if the Knight gets two Masks of damage. Also, if the Knight uses Focus to heal a Mask, the Hiveblood Charm’s recovery will stop.
The Hiveblood Charm also recovers Lifeblood Masks gained due to Joni’s Blessing Charm. However, this will take, but it takes twice as long. Lifeblood Masks from other Charms, such as Lifeblood Cocoons, the Lifeblood Heart, and the Lifeblood Core Charms, are unaffected by the Hiveblood Charm.
This Charm is best used to recover health when Soul isn’t easily obtainable. This is particularly useful in tricky platforming challenges, especially when few enemies exist. The Hiveblood Charm is useful in battle if the player can easily dodge enemies, and it’s hard to find windows to heal.
Because of that, the Hiveblood Charm works nicely with Charms that can damage enemies while dodging, like Glowing Womb or Sharp Shadow Charm. The Knight is unlikely to attack enemies while waiting for the Hiveblood Charm to regain a Mask.
How to Get the Hiveblood Charm in Hollow Knight
The Knight can get the Hiveblood Charm in the easternmost room in the Hive. This area is a sub-area in the bottom right corner of the Kingdom’s Edge. To find the Hiveblood Charm, the Knight must traverse through almost the entirety of the Hive. Not only that, but the Knight must also defeat the Hive Knight to reach the Hiveblood Charm.
Requirements
Before the Knight can acquire the Hiveblood Charm, there are a few abilities that the Knight must have. One of those is Mantis Claw’s ability. This ability allows the Knight to cling to walls and jump off them. Another required ability is the Mothwing Cloak ability. This ability enables the Knight to dash forward. The last required ability is the Monarch Wings ability. This ability enables the Knight to jump while in mid-air.
Also, it is required that the Knight has learned the Vengeful Spirit spell or upgraded it to the Shade Soul spell. These spells enable the Knight to conjure a spirit (or shadow in the case of the Shade Soul spell) and shoot it forward to deal damage to enemies.
Enemies
The Knight will encounter different enemies on the way to the Hiveblood Charm. To be more specific, the Knight will encounter Hivelings, Husk Hives, Hive Soldiers, Hive Guardians, and, as mentioned, Hive Knight.
Path to the Hiveblood Charm in Hollow Knight
To get the Hiveblood Charm, the Knight must do these:
- Exit the Tram in the far southwest corner of Kingdom’s Edge and move to the right. Enter a narrow path, then jump and dash (Mothwing Cloak) or double jump (Monarch Wings) over the spike pit to land on a platform to the right.
- After that, continue to the right, where the Knight will find another spike pit, two Hivelings, and a wall. Eliminate the Hivelings, then cast the Vengeful Spirit spell or the Shade Soul Spell on the wall to destroy it. This will then reveal an opening. Pass through the newly revealed path and head to the right to take the exit.
- Next, the Knight has entered the Hive! Go to the right, where the Knight will run into two more Hivelings and a Husk Hive. Head up the slightly raised platform. In the middle of that, double jump (Monarch Wings ability) and climb up the wall above on the right using the Mantis Claw ability. Here, the Knight will find another Hiveling. Go to the right to exit the room.
- Then, go to the right, where the Knight will encounter another Hiveling. Head to the platform below on the right and go to the small platform below on the left. Here, the Knight will find two more Hivelings.
- Go to the ledge below on the wall on the left, and jump down towards the small platform slightly below on the right, where the Knight will run into three more Hivelings. Head to the smaller platform below on the right, where two more Hivelings exist.
- Drop down to reach the bottom of the room. A Bench inside the exit on the left to heal and save the game. There, the Knight will also run into a Hive Soldier.
- Afterward, go to the right, where the Knight finds another Husk Hive. Head up the platform on the right and drop down the gap on the right. Climb up the tall platform on the right, where the Knight will find a Husk Hive. Head up the platform above on the left, then jump and dash or double jump towards the small platform on the right.
- Go up the platform above on the right, where the Knight will find a Hiveling and a Hive Soldier. Jump twice to reach the platform above on the left. Climb up the platform above where there is another Hive Soldier.
- Jump and climb up the platform above on the left, where another Hive Soldier is. Then, jump towards the platform above on the left, where there are three more Hivelings.

Jump, then climb up the platform above, where there is a Hive Guardian and a Hiveling. Head up the platform above on the left, head up on the path above, then head to the right, where there is another Hiveling. Exit the room at the end of the path.
- Then, go to the right and drop down the platforms where there is another Hive Soldier and a Hiveling. Head up the elevated platform, drop down the ledge on the right, and drop down the platform below. Head to the right and drop down the gap to land on a small platform.
- Drop down to the bottom of the room and head to the left to find a Hiveling and a breakable part in the middle of the wall on the left. The Knight will not be able to break this wall with their Nail.
- To break it, the Knight must lead one of the Hive Guardians in the room to it and let it smash the breakable wall. Beyond this wall, the Knight will find a Mask Shard. Here, the Knight can continue to the left to find some Hivelings and a shortcut to the previous room.
- Following that, go to the right, where the Knight will find a Husk Soldier. Head up the slightly elevated platform where there is a Husk Hive. Drop down on the right and continue to the right. Jump up another slightly elevated platform, then double jump to reach the platform above.
- Here, the Knight will encounter a Husk Guardian. Jump and dash, then jump again to the right to reach a platform. Here, attack the barriers to clear the path, then take the exit on the right.
- Afterward, head to the right while clearing the path, and the Knight will reach a large open area. Head to the opposite side of this area, and the path to continue and back will close. Then, a few Hivelings will drop down along with the Hive Knight. The Knight must now defeat the Hive Knight to continue.

At the end of the platform, jump and dash or double jump to reach the small platform above the spikes. Jump and dash or double jump to reach the next small platform. Moves
The following are the moves that the Hive Knight will perform:
- Leap – To move around the arena, the Hive Knight will jump. The jump can reach the arena’s top but not follow the Knight. The Knight will still receive damage if they get in contact with the Hive Knight.
- Lunge – The Hive Knight will lunge at the Knight with his weapon. This attack will cover around 65% of the ground.
- Surprise Slash – This boss will teleport to either side of the Knight and attack using his weapon while moving forward. This attack will cover around 35% of the arena. The Hive Knight may perform this attack in mid-air if the Knight is in mid-air. If this happens, the attack’s range will be slightly increased.
- Honey Spikes – The Hive Knight will plunge his weapon into the floor, releasing three spheres of honey loaded with spikes that will hover in the arena. These spheres will burst in the order they appeared. They will burst every half second after the third sphere appears and spikes emerge. The spheres will swiftly appear one after the other, and no two orbs will be in the same row or column. Each of the three honey spheres has eight spikes, and when they burst, the spikes move in the direction in which they are pointed. The Knight cannot destroy the honey spheres, but the Knight can hit them with the Nail to move them. The Hive Knight will only start performing this attack when his HP is reduced to 780. Also, the Hive Knight will use the Leap attack right after the first sphere bursts.
- Swarm Release – The Hive Knight will spew 12 Hivelings out of his mouth. The Hivelings will rise and then disappear above the top of the arena. Then, seven Hivelings will drop down in shallow arcs from random points at the top of the room while gradually following the Knight’s position. The Hive Knight will then perform the Lunge, Leap, and/or another different attack while the Hivelings drop down. Also, the Hive Knight will only use this attack after his HP is reduced to roughly 550. If the Hive Knight is defeated after the first Hiveling starts the attack, the other Hivelings will keep attacking while the Hive Knight dies.
Strategy
The battle against the Hive Knight will undoubtedly be simpler if the Knight obtains the Shade Cloak ability beforehand. This ability is the upgrade to the Mothwing Cloak ability, enabling the Knight to dash through enemies and their attacks. The Shade Cloak ability is useful for avoiding the Hive Knight’s Surprise Slash attack, as this attack is almost impossible to dodge. The Knight can also dash through Hive Knight’s Lunge and Swarm Release attacks. The Shade Cloak makes dealing with the Hivelings easier.
Cyclone Slash Nail Art is particularly effective against Hive Knight because the Knight can repeatedly move horizontally while pressing the Attack button.
When the Knight deals enough damage to the Hive Knight, the Hive Knight will collapse to the ground and mumble gently. This means the Hive Knight is staggered, which can be a good opportunity to heal.
Regarding Charms, the Quick Focus Charm is useful because it can help the Knight heal faster. Fortunately, there are many opportunities to heal during the battle with the Hive Knight. Examples are when the Knight is out of the Lunge or Surprise Slash attack range and, of course, if the Hive Knight is staggered.
Another beneficial Charm is the Sharp Shadow Charm. This Charm assists in dealing damage to foes while dashing through them using the Shade Cloak ability. It also extends the distance covered by the dash.
Aside from the Charms mentioned, the following are also useful Charms:
Charm | Effect |
---|---|
Longnail Charm | Increases the Knight’s Nail’s range by 15%. |
Mark of Pride Charm | Increases the Knight’s Nail’s range by 25%. |
Shaman Stone Charm | Increases the damage of Spells while also increasing the size of the Vengeful Spirit or Shade Soul spell. |

Thorns of Agony Charm | When the Knight receives damage, thorny vines sprout and inflict contact damage to enemies. |
Fragile Strength or Unbreakable Charm | Increases the damage of the Knight’s Nail by 50%. |
Defender’s Crest Charm | Releases harmful clouds around the Knight that inflict damage to enemies. |
Spore Shroom Charm | A cloud of harmful spores is released, surrounding the Knight and damaging enemies. |
