Video game movies are rarely good, but Sonic the Hedgehog has managed to endure and has been greenlit for a third movie.
Now as per the official announcement, it’s been revealed that the third Sonic film is now set to come out on December 20, 2024. Here’s the post:
We don’t have an official synopsis for the movie yet, but we do know that the film will now feature Sonic’s rival from the games, Shadow the Hedgehog. While I do expect some kind of return from Dr. Robotnik, Jim Carrey has been vocal about Sonic 2 being his last movie. Hopefully it doesn’t have to come to that.
This is also just my own pitch, but I think it would be great if they manage to cast Ben Schwartz’s Parks and Recreation counterpart Aziz Ansari for the voice of Shadow. Their chemistry is fun, and it would be great to watch Shadow and Sonic banter in some way. If not Aziz, maybe they can bring in Thomas Middleditch who is also a frequent collaborator of Schwartz.
For now, the Sonic franchise has ended with Sonic finding his own gang of super-powered creatures, Tails and Knuckles. While we should expect some more of the human characters to stick around, I think there’s enough here to actually just have the story focused on Sonic and his friends.
Catch Sonic the Hedgehog 3 when it comes to theaters on Dec. 20, 2024.
