Video game adaptations are dime a dozen, and almost every big game seems to be getting the move/TV treatment with shows like The Last of Us, and movies like Uncharted and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Just when you think they’ve adapted every big property, Apple TV drops a trailer for a film about the most unlikely game to get a movie—Tetris.
Watch the trailer for Tetris starring Taron Egerton (Rocket Man) as Henk Rogers, the man who brought Tetris to the mainstream:
The official description of the film reads:
An American and Russian computer geek form an unlikely friendship as they try to evade the KGB and smuggle the world’s most famous video game out of the Soviet Union.
While a lot of fans know that Tetris has Russian origins, they probably had no idea about all the political intrigue surrounding the licensing of the game, especially since the game was produced around the time of the Cold War.
We don’t know how a game about laying down bricks in a straight line managed to garner the interest of the KGB, but I guess that’s what we’re expecting the movie to show us. The trailer even teased the introduction of the Gameboy, which was said to have helped further the popularity of Tetris.
Watch out for Tetris when it premieres on Apple TV+ on March 31.
