Epic Games Store launches on mobile devices for free, and here’s everything you need to know about it!

The Epic Games Store Launches on Mobile for Free

Epic Games has finally launched its long-awaited store for mobile devices, Android and iOS. This marks a significant shift in the mobile gaming world, offering gamers a new way to access their favorite titles outside the native Android and iOS app stores.

Back in Mack 2024, Epic Games announced that they were working on bringing the Epic Games Store to Android and iOS with an expected release by the end of the year. However, they’ve accelerated the launch, and you can now access more games on your mobile devices via the Epic Games Store mobile app.

Epic Games Store Launches on Mobile

The Epic Games Store is now available to all Android users globally and exclusively to iOS users in the EU. The exclusivity of the store’s support for some iOS users is due to the fact that Apple doesn’t allow third-party app stores except for users based in the EU, as required by the Digital Markets Act changes.

As stated by Tim Sweeney, Epic Games CEO and founder, “The tide is turning, and the mobile ecosystem is finally opening up to competition. We are grateful to the European Commission for making it possible to launch the Epic Games Store and offer our games to iOS users in the European Union. Now European iOS users and all Android users can access our store and games, as they’ve always been able to do on open platforms like PC and Mac. The fight is far from over, but this is tangible progress for developers and consumers who can begin to benefit from competition and choice.”

Epic provided the steps to install the store app on Android and iOS, which follows the typical process for side-loading apps on mobile devices.

Installation Requirements

Here are the requirements to install the store as mentioned by Epic:

  • For Android, you’ll need to be running Android 7.0 or later
  • For iPhone, you’ll need to be running OS 17.6 or later

However, each game in the store will have its own installation requirements, which may differ entirely from those above.

Fortnite Is Fully Back on Mobile Devices

Epic Games Store launches on mobile along with Fortnite

Due to the ongoing payment row between Epic, Apple, and Google, Fortnite was pulled from the Apps Store and Play Store in 2020. Since then, iOS users have not been able to enjoy Fortnite on their devices except for cloud gaming: Android users still had the option to side-load.

But here is the good news: Epic has made Fortnite available for all Android users and iOS users in the EU with the release of the Epic Games Store app for mobile devices. You can log in to your existing Epic Games account in Fortnite to enjoy cross-platform account progression. Other games made available with store launch on mobile are:

  • Rocket League Sideswipe
  • Fall Guys

Conclusion

With the launch of the Epic Games Store for mobile devices, we can anticipate greater access to Epic Games on smartphones, particularly iOS. While it’s likely that developers will make games available on Android through the store, the high fees from Apple present a significant barrier for developers. Despite this, the store’s release is still a win-win for mobile gamers.
