We could have nearly gotten ‘Ugly Sonic’ in Sonic the Hedgehog, but he actually found a way to be onscreen with the Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers movie. What’s funny is, Sonic was actually a late addition, and the character was supposed to be Jar Jar Binks from Star Wars.
This was revealed by storyboard artist Simeon Wilkins on IG:
Though it was only for a small role, ‘Ugly Sonic’ still managed to actually have some kind of effect on the story. Not to spoil a months-old film, but he does come back in the end with the police to save Chip and Dale. Was that role supposed to be Jar Jar in the end?
We don’t know what the future holds for the Chip ‘n Dale franchise, but I thought that the Rescue Rangers reboot was fantastic. The crossovers were absolutely nuts, and cinephiles will love all the meta humor about animation and the industry overall.
As for Sonic the Hedgehog, he’s enjoying success at the box office, with the third film teasing a clash with Shadow the Hedgehog. We don’t know how long the series plans to go on in theaters, but I can very well imagine a franchise that runs as long as those Ice Age films.
