CD Projekt Red may have been pretty sparse on details when it came to the announcement of their next Witcher game, but fans of Geralt can always count on Netflix to have some reveals for their series adaptation.
Just in, it’s been confirmed that production for the third season of The Witcher has already begun, and we have a set photo featuring Henry Cavill, Freya Allan, and Anya Chalotra. Check them out:
Netflix has also dropped a synopsis for the third season which reads:
“As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it. Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line—or risk losing each other forever.”
IGN reports that the series is currently aiming to run for seven seasons, with a lot of emphasis on using the books as the blueprint. As of now, it looks like The Witcher is currently the biggest fantasy show on Netflix and it doesn’t have too much competition.
Admittedly, The Witcher didn’t turn out to be “Netflix’s Game of Thrones” as some fans hoped, but there is always room for improvement. The source material is still solid, and Cavill is wonderfully cast as Geralt.
No release date has been set for the third season of The Witcher, but you can catch the first two now available on Netflix.
