Costumes, beluga whales, and even Donald Duck – with GTA V Mods, almost anything is possible.
Modders and developers have had a ton of time to work with the seventh major installment of the Grand Theft Auto series – GTA V.
Of course, many players will have already finished the game’s primary story mode nine years ago and only rely on the constant stream of online content to keep their hearts content.
You might have come across some weird custom GTA V content and wonder how Donald Duck, Goofy, and their friends made it to Los Santos.
Today, we’re going to show you how to install mods on GTA V so that you can add a ton of custom content to the classic action-adventure game. Let’s go!
Getting Started
Before we start installing a bunch of files and apps, here’s are a few things to remember:
- Mods mostly only work in Singleplayer
- Some scripts that you download online might affect GTA Online’s scripts. You will most likely get flagged as a cheater if you accidentally install a mod script that messes with GTA online, so be careful with the mods scripts you download.
- Saved Files will not be affected.
- Mods are easily reversible when you’re done messing around. Simply verifying the integrity of game files on Steam should wipe away any mods you’ve done to the game.
With that out of the way, let’s move on to the next step, where you download the necessary files for installing mods on GTA V.
Supporting Mods
You need to download three separate mods to freely inject scripts into GTA V. Scripts change the way the game handles specific in-game elements and allows us to download and add mods into the game.
You will need Alexander Blade’s Script Hook V, which gives modders the ability to write scripts and hook them onto GTA V.
Click on this link to download Script Hook V.
Script Hook V comes complete with the latest Asi Loader and Native Trainer. Neat!
How to install Script Hook V on GTA V
Installation is a simple process that should take less than five minutes to complete:
- Extract your newly downloaded ScriptHookV zip file
- Open the extracted folder
- Double-click on the ‘bin’ folder
- Copy the ScriptHookV.dll file
- Navigate to your GTA V root folder (for Steam, you can right-click on GTA V on your library>Properties>Local Files>Browse)
- Paste the ScriptHookV.dll file into the root folder
- Done!
The process above applies to the Asi Loader and NativeTrainer as well. This time, copy the ‘dinput8.dll’ and ‘NativeTrainer.asi’ files, respectively, from the ScriptHookV extracted folder and paste them into the GTA V root folder.
How to Install ScriptHookVDotNet
A couple of GTA V mods these days are built around the .NET framework instead of the usual LUA script language. To support these mods, you have to install ScriptHookVDotNet.
- Download ScriptHookVDotNet from GitHub (Scroll down to the ‘Assets’ section and click on ScriptHookVDotNet.zip)
- Extract the downloaded ZIP file
- Copy everything inside the extracted folder except for LICENSE and README text files.
- Navigate to your GTA V root folder
- Paste the copied files into the GTA V root folder
- Done!
How to install LUA Plugin on GTA V
Garry’s Mod and Roblox fans will be pretty familiar with LUA scripts. LUA scripts are plain text files that can be edited and modified via simple text editors such as the humble ‘Notepad.’
For GTA V, it allows players to easily copy and paste mods scripts that can alter in-game elements.
Installation is pretty similar to installing Script Hook V on GTA V:
- Download the GTA LUA Plugin from this link – LUA Plugin for Script Hook V
- Extract the newly downloaded LUA Plugin ZIP File
- Copy everything inside the extracted folder (scripts folder + LUA.asi file)
- Navigate to your GTA V root folder
- Paste both files into the GTA V root folder
- Done!
How to install Scripts on GTA V
Now that you’ve downloaded and installed the necessary supporting mods to use Mod Scripts on GTA V, here’s how to install and start using them.
- Download Mod Scripts from gta5-mods.com
- For this example, let’s give Franklin a backpack. Download this Backpack Mod
- Extract the Backpack Mod ZIP file
- Copy the extracted files
- Navigate to your GTA V root folder
- Open the ‘scripts’ folder within the GTA V root folder
- Paste the copied files from the extracted Backpack Mod folder
- Done!
Note: Mods will usually have installation instructions included within them. Make sure you give these a good read so that you don’t run into installation errors or issues.
For the downloaded Backpack Mod, all you have to do to activate it is to bring up the ‘Cheats Console’ by hitting tilde (~) on your keyboard. Type in “backpack,” then press enter.
Modding Heaven
Mod-friendly games will continue to live for as long as the community finds ways to add content to their favorite games, and GTA V is no exception.
Thanks to GTA V’s hyperactive modding community, a ton of fun custom content can easily be added to the game, opening a world of possibilities around Los Santos.
