It’s no mystery that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was a huge hit, and the series was so well-received that it even got more people playing Cyberpunk 2077. Despite its success though, we shouldn’t be expecting a second season.
Talking to Famitsu (via Video Games Chronicle), CD Projekt Red community manager Satoru Honma has confirmed that there are no plans to make a follow-up season to Edgerunners. He says:
“I personally would like to continue to work with Japanese studios to produce more anime in the future, partly because we have received very good feedback… However, just to be clear, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was planned as a standalone work, so there’s no such thing as ‘we are actually working on Season 2 in the background.’”
If you’ve seen the complete season of Edgerunners, you’ll know that one season makes a lot of sense. They’ve pretty much closed the story of David and Lucy, and any update on that would feel like it would cheapen the point of the first season.
If anything, they can always make a new season which consists of a completely new team of characters, but as of now, the Edgerunners’ story has been told, and it doesn’t really need any revisiting.
Though there isn’t a second season planned for the anime, Honma does say that there could be hope for another series adaptation which would be “something completely different.” With a sequel already in the works for Cyberpunk, I think an anime series might be a good idea to help promote the release.
For now, you can watch the completed Cyberpunk: Edgerunners now streaming on Netflix. Cyberpunk 2077 is now playable for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4|5, and PC.
