Designing is the core gameplay of Animal Crossing and this can only be done with decorative items. The more you get creative with your island, the more items you will be buying to use for your designs.

How to Expand Storage in Animal Crossing New Horizons

When you want to rearrange things or redo your island design, you will most likely need to temporarily keep the items in storage. To other players, collecting items like costumes is another form of challenge that they have to complete.

For at least the two reasons above, you would want to have a storage with enough capacity to store the said items. But there is a limit to the number of items you can store. The good news is that there is a way to expand your storage.

Your storage will be in your own home and the way to increase its capacity is to upgrade your house through renovations with Tom Nook.

You are going to need to upgrade your house 7 times to reach its maximum level and each time you do so, you will have to make a loan with Tom Nook.

With the basement as the last house upgrade, you will have storage with a capacity of 1,600 item slots.

You can still ask Tom Nook to increase this storage capacity after paying the last house renovation loan. The storage capacity can be increased four times from 2,400 to 5,000 item slots.

However, these storage expansion requests do not come for free and you need to pay up front as it is not available as a loan. The first storage expansion will cost you 500,000 Bells and the fee gets higher as the expansion gets larger.

After the arrival of Animal Crossing New Horizon’s 2.0 update, you can further expand your storage up to 5,000.

You will also unlock an item called a storage shed, which you can place anywhere outside your house. This will give you access to your storage without having to go inside your house.

You can get the DIY for the storage shed from the ADB kiosk for 6,000 Nook Miles. However, it can only be unlocked if you have expanded your home storage at least once.

If the 5,000-slot storage capacity is still not enough for you, the remaining option is to add more island residents. Yes, you can add more player residents aside from the animal villagers that you have invited to your island. Each additional player resident means an additional house and therefore, more storage space.

The new residents are other accounts in your Nintendo Switch console. To save items to these accounts’ storage, you are going to have to drop the items on the island and pick those up with the other accounts/residents.
