Video game movies rarely do well in theaters, but Netflix seems to have found success with adaptations for League of Legends, Castlevania, and most recently, Cyberpunk 2077. Now thanks to TUDUM 2022, we have our first look at another series based on a successful video game franchise.

Netflix Drops First Look at Onimusha Anime

Here’s our first look at the Onimusha anime based on Capcom’s popular series:

Legendary director Takashi Miike will be teaming up with Dragon’s Dogma director Shinya Sugai to bring the series to life. It’s also worth noting that Sublimation will be providing the animation for the series—which will be in the 3D anime format.

Onimusha (which translates to ‘Oni Warrior’) is a fantasy action game which was launched back in 2001, and a remaster of the first game was released back in 2019. The game series is said to feature actual characters in Japanese history, but this time around, fantastical creatures and elements are added to their story.

Admittedly, the anime adaptation route is still kind of a hit-and-miss when it comes to games. Though series like Arcane work, Dragon’s Dogma didn’t get the warm reception it was expecting. Lucky for Netflix, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners has actually renewed some interest in Night City, and Cyberpunk 2077 is currently seeing an uptick in players. With Capcom said to be planning more Onimusha games in the future, a hit anime could be just the thing to get potential players interested in dormant franchise.

As of now, no release date has been announced for the Onimusha anime, but you can watch out for it on Netflix.
