Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is an open-world game where the player is a transferee in a huge school in the Paldea Region. In the game, the player and the player only gets to decide whatever they want to do: whether to track down Titan Pokemon, defeat all the Pokemon Gyms, become the champion, and become the very best like no one ever was, to defeat the nefarious Team Star, or simply just complete the Pokedex and catch them all!

Pokemon Scarlet/Violet: Cortondo Gym (Bug Type) Guide

Here, we will talk about defeating Pokemon Gyms, which are part of the ‘Victory Road’ quest line, and in this guide, we will talk about defeating the Bug-type Pokemon Gym in Cortondo City!

The Cortondo Gym can be found in Cortondo City, the first city west of Mesagoza City, just ahead of South Province (Area Two) (or northeast of Alfornada City or northwest of Los Angeles Platos).

Before the player can start battling against the Gym Leader of a Pokemon Gym, there is a new mechanic in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet where the player must complete a Gym Test to prove that the player can take on the Gym Leader. Every Pokemon Gym has its Gym Test, and the Gym Test in the Cortondo Gym is the Olive Roll Challenge!

To start the Olive Roll Challenge Gym Test, let the player head inside the Cortanda Gym and talk to the receptionist just ahead of the entrance. Then the receptionist will tell the player that the player must first complete the Gym Test to face the Gym Leader, Katy, which means taking on the Olive Roll. The receptionist will then explain the importance of Olive production in Cortondo City, where they hold the Olive Harvest Festival yearly to usher in bumper crops. Then, the receptionist will explain how to complete the Olive Roll Challenge by rolling a large olive-shaped ball to the goal.

After talking to the receptionist, exit the Cortondo Gym, head to the western end of Cortondo City, then take the path that heads north there; the player will see a large fenced area with a person just outside saying that the player can try the Olive Roll right there.

Talk to the attendant, who will explain that the player must get the olive-shaped ball over various obstacles and push it to the goal to clear the course. After that, confirm the prompt to start on the Olive Roll Challenge!

The Olive Roll Challenge is very easy to beat, and there is a path where the player can just push the large olive-shaped ball toward the goal, which is a large red basket. However, there are also two shortcuts where a Trainer blocks the paths and a couple of Smolivs, and the player must defeat the Trainer to pass through. The first one is on the eastern side of the area where the Trainer will use a Kricketune, and the other one is on the northern side of the area just near the goal where the Trainer will use a Venonat.

Suppose the player does decide to battle these trainers and use these shortcuts. In that case, it is worth mentioning that Kricketune is a Bug-type Pokemon which means it has a weakness to Fire-type and Flying-type. Rock-type moves (super effective) and resistance to Fighting-type, Grass-type, and Ground-type moves (not very effective), and Venonat is a Bug and Poison-type Pokemon which means it has a weakness to Fire-type, Flying-type, Psychic-type, and Rock-type moves (super effective) and resistance to Fighting type, Grass type, and especially Bug type, Fairy type, and Poison type moves (not very effective).

After completing the Olive Roll Challenge, head back to the Cortondo Gym and talk to the receptionist again. The receptionist will congratulate the player for completing the Olive Roll Challenge and say that the player has now earned the right to challenge the Cortondo Gym Leader, Katy the Sugarbug! Confirm on the prompt that the player is ready to challenge Gym Leader Katy, and the player will now be brought to the battle court, which is the building just across the Cortondo Gym.

After that, the player will meet Gym Leader Katy, who will introduce herself as the owner of Patisserie Soapberry and the Gym Leader in Cortondo City. As mentioned above, the Cortondo Gym is a Bug-type Gym, meaning Gym Leader Katy will mostly use Bug-type Pokemon.

Gym Leader Katy will use three Pokemon: a Level 14 Nymble, a Level 14 Tarountula, and a Level 15 Teddiursa with a Bug Tera type. Gym Leader Katy will use these Pokemon in this order and Terastallize Teddiursa, changing it from normal to pure Bug-type. As all of Gym Leader, Katy’s Pokemon are Bug-type Pokemon, it is worth noting that Bug-type Pokemon have a weakness to Fire-type, Flying-type, and Rock-type moves (super effective) and resistance to Fighting-type, Grass-type, and Ground-type moves (not very effective).

After defeating Gym Leader Katy, the player will receive the Bug Badge and TM021; a move called Pounce. Pounce is a physical Bug-type move where the Pokemon will pounce on the opposing Pokemon to attack and lower its Speed stat. Pounce has 50 Power, 100% Accuracy, and 20 PP.

Now that the player has defeated Gym Leader Katy and completed the Cortondo Gym, the player is now one step closer to completing the ‘Victory Road’ quest line and becoming the Champion in the Paldea Region!
