Video game adaptations are notorious for being bad, but Sonic the Hedgehog managed to break the mold when it released back in 2020. The sequel Sonic the Hedgehog 2 just came to theaters last weekend, and it looks like the movie is gearing up for a strong box office run.
As per Variety, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 managed to earn $71 million at the box office last weekend. To compare, the first Sonic film earned $58 million in its first three days in the box office. We should expect Sonic 2 to have made so much more by the end of its run.
Paramount president of domestic distribution Chris Aronson had this to say about the film’s early success: “This film did such a great job in service of the fans while not excluding general audiences… That’s a neat trick.”
So far, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has been gathering very strong reviews online. The movie also seems to be confident enough that it will get a third entry, seeing as the after-credits scene had teased another highly-anticipated character from the game franchise. We can just expect the Sonic family to keep growing from this point.
I guess it’s also worth noting that the success of Sonic 2 is an indicator that families are now feeling safer when it comes to going to theaters. While movies like West Side Story may have floundered in the box office, maybe audiences are now ready to go back to theaters with the current state of the pandemic.
After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is eager to prove he has what it takes to be a true hero. His test comes when Dr. Robotnik returns, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a globe-trotting journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.
