Lovecraft Country showrunner Misha Green was set to write and direct a sequel to 2018’s Tomb Raider movie, but it looks like Lara Croft’s next adventure will not be moving forward.
According to The Wrap, MGM had lost the film rights to the next Tomb Raider film, meaning that the sequel that original had Green in line to helm has now been canceled. What is more, Alicia Vikander will no longer be attached to the role of Lara Croft.
MGM was said to have had until last May to greenlight a Tomb Raider sequel, but since the studio did not push forward with anything, a bidding war for the TR IP has been sparked among several studios.
We do not know which studio could have the most to gain by earning the rights to Tomb Raider, but I’m guessing that Sony might want a piece of that pie—seeing that they also own the rights to the Uncharted series. Imagine the crossover hype they could generate by having Tom Holland’s Nathan Drake teaming up with a new Lara Croft?
Admittedly, the 2018 Tomb Raider was only a moderate success, and many fans thought the film was pretty forgettable overall. We don’t know what direction they should go for the subsequent TR adaptation, but I think there’s room to completely reinvent the character outside of the new games from Crystal Dynamics.
A Tomb Raider sequel hasn’t been officially announced, but we’ll probably have to wait a while before we get another reboot.
