One of the Shrines in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the Kah Yah Shrine or the Quick Thinking. The Shrine itself requires Link to press on two pressure plates by getting on two moving platforms, each with its challenges requiring quick thinking and actions to reach the altar. However, before Link can access the shrine, Link must first complete the A Fragmented Monument Shrine Quest. This shrine and shrine quest may seem confusing and intimidating, but in this guide, you will learn how to complete the A Fragmented Monument Shrine Quest, complete the Kah Yah Shrine, obtain the chest inside, and claim the Spirit Orb.
Link will be rewarded with Spirit Orbs for completing Shrines. The Spirit Orbs obtained can be exchanged for more Heart Containers or Stamina Vessels. As there are 120 Shrines all over Hyrule, Link can get 120 Spirit Orbs. You get to decide whether you want Link to have more Hearts or more Stamina.
Location
Link can not access the Kah Yah Shrine immediately. Still, the shrine will emerge from the ground in the Palmorae Ruins, just east of Lurelin Village on the southeast part of Hyrule (the shrine is southeast of Mount Dunsel or southwest of Necluda Sea). The Kah Yah Shrine is one of eight shrines in the Faron Tower region.
A Fragmented Monument Shrine Quest
Link must first complete the A Fragmented Monument Shrine Quest to access the Kah Yah Shrine. To start this shrine quest, head to the location where the shrine will appear (the location mentioned above), and there you will find two Ancient pedestals and a man in a green shirt named Garini looking at a broken stone monument.
Talk to Garini, and after asking him what he is doing, he will tell Link that he is just examining the stone monument and that there is a very spiritual aura to it. He will then say that he realized that there is writing engraved on the stone monument, so now he is trying to figure out exactly what is engraved on the stone monument.
After Link asks if he can help, Garini will tell Link that this stone monument was once much larger, but it broke apart after an earthquake hit the area a while back. Garini will ask Link to help him find the missing fragments of the stone monument, which are scattered around the area.
And these fragments have the same kind of script engraved on them, which glow with an eerie light at night. Garini will ask Link to draw a picture of the fragments and bring them to him. Then, just like that, the A Fragmented Monument Shrine Quest has started!
There are three fragments of the stone monument to find around the area:
As Garini said, the stone monument fragment is easier to find at night because the script engraved on the stone monument fragment will glow. The closest one is just east of the Palmorae Ruins, near the edge of the cliffs of Cape Cales. After finding the stone monument fragment, press the up directional button, select the Camera Rune ability, press the L button to aim the camera, aim at the stone monument fragment, and press the A button to capture the photo.
Another one of the stone monument fragments can be found near the beach with some rocks just south of the Palmorae Ruins and west of Palmorae Beach. Take a photo of the stone monument fragment using the Camera Rune ability.
The last one of the stone monument fragments can be found next to a tree at the very tip of Soka Point, which is southeast of Palmorae Beach or east of Cape Cresia. Take a photo of the stone monument fragment using the Camera Rune ability.
After taking a picture of all three stone monument fragments, head back to Garini, still with the Ancient pedestal and stone monument in the Palmorae Ruins, and show him the pictures of the stone monument fragments. After that, Garini will thank Link because he now has a good shot at deciphering the entire monument. After giving Garini a moment to do just that, he will tell Link the passage:
“When the two find their place and kneel in reverence, the shrine will reveal itself.”
Garini will then say that he does not know what the passage means. However, let Link kneel on one of the Ancient pedestals by pressing the Left Stick, and Garini will start to understand what the passage means. He will then kneel on the other Ancient pedestal, which will result in the two Ancient pedestals turning blue then, finally, the Kah Yah Shrine will emerge just ahead of them, and the A Fragmented Monument Shrine Quest is completed!
Quick Thinking
Upon entering the Kah Yah Shrine, you will see the altar just straight ahead of Link, but the gate to enter it is still closed. On Link’s right side, a ramp goes up to four barrels and another closed gate with a chest. Straight ahead of the ramp on Link’s right, a moving platform moves horizontally and a switch. On Link’s left side, another ramp goes up to another set of four barrels and another closed gate with a chest, and straight ahead of the ramp on Link’s left, there is another moving platform that moves horizontally.
To complete this shrine, this is what Link must do:
- Head up the ramp on Link’s right, pick up one of the barrels, wait for the moving platform near Link, get on the moving platform with the barrel, and set the barrel down on the moving platform.
- A closed gate on the path of the moving platform will prevent Link and the barrel from going through, and beside the gate is a switch. After Link, the barrel, and the moving platform pass the first arc, they quickly shoot the switch using Link’s bow and arrow after they reach the gate. This will result in the gate being raised, but another gate will be lowered just ahead of the path. After passing the first gate, quickly shoot the switch again using Link’s bow and arrow to raise the second gate.
- At the end of the moving platform’s path is another platform with a pressure plate. Pick up the barrel and set it down on the pressure plate. This will result in the gate with the chest inside near the opened ramp.
- After that, drop down from the platform, head back to the ramp, and open the chest to obtain a Royal Claymore.
- Next, head up the ramp on the left side of the shrine, pick up one of the barrels, wait for the moving platform to be near Link, get on the moving platform with the barrel, and let Link stand on the left side of the moving platform while carrying the barrel.
- On the path of the moving platform, there is a metal grate that fully blocks the right side of the moving platform’s path. After that, another metal grate blocks the upper half of the moving platform’s path, and after that, another metal grate fully blocks the left side of the moving platform’s path. After Link, the barrel, and the moving platform passes the first metal grate on the right side, set the barrel on the right side of the moving platform, and quickly let Link kneel by pressing the Left Stick so he will not get hit by the second metal grate, then after passing that second metal grate, let Link stand on the right side of the moving platform so that Link will not get hit by the third metal grate on the left side of the moving platform’s path.
- At the end of the moving platform’s path, another platform has another pressure plate. Pick up the barrel and set it down on the pressure plate. This will result in the gate with the chest inside near the ramp being opened.
- After that, drop down from the platform, head back to the ramp, and open the chest to obtain a Small Key.
- Next, head to the closed gate of the altar and open it using the Small Key you just obtained from the chest earlier.
- Finally, go near the altar, talk to the monk, and claim your Spirit Orb!
