Worlds in Valheim get generated interestingly. The game features a procedurally-generating worlds feature, but that is not the main take of the worlds. Instead of having one huge chunk of land, Valheim has many islands.
On top of that, in order to progress in the game, you will most definitely have to visit other islands, since resources and creatures will be quite different in different biomes/islands. This means that most of the time you will find yourself in need of a sailing incentive, like a boat or a raft. Nevertheless, if you have experienced boats in Valheim, you will know that it is quite hard to sail one.
How to Sail – Valheim
If you haven’t got a raft or a boat yet, make sure that you craft one using the workbench. Now, there are different boats in Valheim, but all of them have the same sailing mechanics.
Where players get easily confused is wind direction, paddle, using the paddle, etc. On the surface it seems very complicated, but it is far from it.
Let’s first talk using your paddle.
Using Your Paddle
No matter what the wind is or whether you have the sail down or up, if you use the paddle, you can move forwards, and side to side, depending on where you want to go.
Activating it is easy, just go on the backside of the boat and click use on the paddle. Use W, A, S, and D to control the boat, and you should be fine.
Nevertheless, sometimes you might want to take advantage of the wind and go faster, this is where the sail comes to light.
Sail
On the right side of the screen, you will have a small circle with a wind icon on it somewhere. This is where the wind is coming from and the direction. The wind can appear both white and grey.
When the wind icon is grey, it means that you will not benefit from the sail judging from the direction you’re going. But if it is white, then you can open up your sail and go a lot faster.
Depending on how fast you want to go you can lower the sail half-way in order to go half the speed!
